Community vehicle needs continuing support

ONE year since its launch, the Clare Red Cross’ multi-purpose community support vehicle is busy bringing people to hospitals all over Ireland. The vehicle, which is based at the Clare Red Cross branch, Tracklands Business Park in Ennis, was bought following a major fundraising campaign. However, raising the cost of purchasing the vehicle is not the end for the Clare Red Cross, who are now appealing for support to allow the service to continue for free to the people of Clare. Treasurer James Lafferty explained, “This multi-purpose community support vehicle was purchased with the support from local businesses, shops, schools and the general public throughout County Clare from 2012 to 2016. Some funding was also received from the National Lottery. “The vehicle has been supporting the people of County Clare, travelling to medical appointments in all major hospitals in Ireland. Mulqueens say farewell to O’Connell Street

FOR 45 years, Mulqueens Florists has been synonymous with O’Connell Street in Ennis. Now, however, the family-run outlet has closed its town centre premises and is fully operating from Carmody Street, where the family have had a second store for 16 years. The Mulqueen link with the town centre goes back to the early1950s, when Margo and Frank Mulqueen opened a grocery shop in Abbey Street. Yet the reason for closing their O’Connell Street shop is a contemporary one and resonates with most people who live or work in Ennis. “A big deciding factor was parking. That’s a major thing,” Brian Mulqueen confirmed. “People are frustrated and the local authority hasn’t provided new parking. People quite often ordered in O’Connell Street and picked it up here in Carmody Street. Or alternatively they got their flowers delivered. We do a lot on our website. You could have people on the edge of town, who order on the website and get it …

AN Ennis businessman has spoken of his “terrifying ordeal” after he was subjected to an alleged armed robbery on Wednesday afternoon, the third break-in in 12 years. Stephen Coote said a man wearing a Hallowe’en mask and dark clothing entered his shop on the Kilrush Road and held a “small black gun” up to his face. Coote’s shop is a well-known landmark in the town and is a stop-off point for people travelling to West Clare. Mr Coote’s mother, Mary, was also working in the shop at the time, when the suspect demanded money on Wednesday. He said Mary has been present for a number of break-ins, including a very serious incident, when she was left with a broken arm after a vicious assault. “He walked me halfway up the shop and started shouting at Mam, who said that she couldn’t open the till.
