Fatal road traffic accident on N68

Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on the N68 Kilrush to Ennis road today, (Friday) at approximately 4pm. The incident involved a collision between a car and a truck. The driver of the car, a female in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later taken to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will take place. The driver of the truck was not injured. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users travelling in the area at the time of the collision who may have camera footage to contact Kilrush Garda station on 065 9080550, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Man detained in Ennis as counterfeit notes are seized

GARDAí have arrested a man in his late teens and seized approximately €2,000 in suspected counterfeit notes following searches in Ennis and Ennistymon today (Thursday). As part of an ongoing investigation, Gardaí from the Clare division carried out a search at two houses in Ennis and Ennisymon. During the search in Ennis, Gardaí seized 100 counterfeit €20 notes. A man in his late teens was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Speaking at Ennis Garda Station, Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona O’Rouke said: “We would like to remind businesses to ensure that staff carry out essential checks on any notes, regardless of the denomination. “Check the obvious security features before accepting notes, including the watermark, security thread, hologram patch and raised print. By taking the time to feel, examine and tilt the notes, businesses can prevent taking the loss to your business.”

Kieran Goss for Cloughleigh concert of remembrance

THE tragic loss of a number of people in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis this year has been the inspiration for the holding of a special concert of remembrance next month. Acclaimed singer / songwriter Kieran Goss will be the headline act for the concert in Cloughleigh Community Centre on December 6 which will also feature his wife Annie Kinsella, Damien Gormley, Siobhan Peoples and band The Citizens. The event, billed as a Concert of Remembrance and Hope has been organised by Fr Ger Fitzgerald along with a group of locals who knew many of those who have passed away. Proceeds from the event will be used to create a memorial to be erected outside Cloughleigh church. Fr Ger explained, “We have experienced in the last year or so a lot of people, young people in particular, that have passed away for one reason or another. Council ‘confident’ about Ennis data centre

NEGOTIATIONS are ongoing to find an end user for the proposed Ennis data centre, and this week County Council chief executive Pat Dowling said he is confident the project will go ahead. The proposed Data Centre at Toureen, just off the Ennis-Tulla road, is said to have the potential to deliver 200 direct permanent jobs, another 150 ancillary jobs, 50 maintenance jobs, and 1,100 jobs in the construction phase. At last Friday’s council budget meeting, Ennis Councillor Pat Daly asked for an update on the proposed development, and Mr Dowling said work is progressing, and that he would attend meetings in the UK this week regarding it. He also said that if it does become a reality, it could make Clare a “quite unique” location. Brave Father’s Memory Lives On

WHEN Caroline Lynch from Quin married lively Dubliner Chris Byrne on June 28, 2013, building a dream home in the Banner County was always part of their plan. The Ringsend native was “larger than life”, says Caroline, and made a big impression on her native village. He found common ground with everyone he met and always had a friendly word. When we’d go out to the pub in Quin, everyone was like: ‘There’s Chris,’ whereas they hardly noticed me and I’m the native!” she smiles. While this year, Caroline is fulfilling the dream of raising her family in Clare, she’ll be doing it without her soul-mate, after losing Chris to an aggressive form of brain cancer in the Spring of 2016. Now, her rocks of support are her parents Ann and Des, her five-year-old son Harry, and a wide circle of relatives and friends. Man dies in Ennis crash

One of the two people injured in the road traffic collision which occurred at Cahercallamore, Ennis yesterday afternoon has died in hospital from his injuries. A male rear passenger in his early 80s was removed to Limerick University Hospital with serious injuries and passed away later.  The female driver and front seat passenger were also treated at Limerick University Hospital with non life threatening injuries. In the second car both the male driver and female passenger were uninjured. The scene was preserved and Garda forensic collision investigators have completed their examination. The road was closed and has since reopened. Gardaí at Ennis are appealing for any witnesses to this road traffic collision to come forward, particularly any motorists who were travelling in the area at the time and may have dash cam footage. Two men arrested by gardai

TWO men in their 30s have been arrested by gardai this morning as part of an on-going operation targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the possession of firearms in County Clare. As part of the operation, detective and uniform Gardaí from the Clare division carried out searches at a number of properties in the Ennis area. Both men are currently detained at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. This operation relates to recent drugs and firearms incidents in Clare and is also related to the seizure of a sub-machine gun, ammunition and approximately €125,000 of suspected cocaine and cannabis herb that were seized in the county in August of last year.

Ennis in the running for Ireland’s Friendliest Place

ENNIS has been named as one of the five finalists vying to be named Ireland’s Friendliest Place. The county capital has passed through a rigorous auditing process with Ennis based retailers assessed by mystery shoppers testing service standards in the town. In 2017 Ennis secured the coveted title and hopes are high for a repeat win. Ennis is up against Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim, Cork City, Limerick City and Naas.
