PEOPLE in Ennis will be putting their best foot forward this weekend in a bid to raise funds for the Burren Chernobyl Project. A fun run/walk will be held on this Saturday, starting at 11am at The Junction in Cloughleigh. The event is being organised as three local creche workers prepare to head to Belarus this August to volunteer at an orphanage. Hazel O’Connor, Bridget Punch and Lisa Cullinan, who work at the Lifford Childcare Centre, will volunteer at the Gorodishche orphanage, joining others from the Burren Chernobyl Project. And in order to raise funds for the worthy cause, the fun run / walk has been organised with hopes that hundreds of people will take part. With a choice of two routes, five kilometres and ten kilometres, the event is something that anybody can take part in. RETAIL Excellence Ireland (REI) has  welcomed the Seanad’s support of an Upward Only Rent Review Bill, proposed by Senator Feargal Quinn. Ennis-based David Fitzsimons, chief executive, REI stated “This is a significant decision taken by members of the Seanad who are very aware of the untold damage being done to family businesses and jobs because of the continued existence of upward only rent review clauses. “The Bill proposed by Senator Quinn is very fair and balanced and provides for a temporary reduction in commercial rent to a market level. The Government will quote Constitutional issues however our Senior Council advice is clear that the Bill in no way undermines Constitutional property rights. It is a fact that many large private landlords and pension funds have refused to grant tenants any rent relief and have overseen a significant level of business failure and job loss,” he said. By CAROL BYRNE LIFE is busy for Ennis Musical Society, as its members put the finishing touches to their 2014 production. Presenting in Glór, the society will run with a string of six performances of Broadway hit musical, Annie, beginning next Tuesday and running through to Saturday, March 1. Kate Corrigan, chairperson of Ennis Musical Society, said there is a lot to prepare in getting a musical to the stage. “There are lots of administrative bits and pieces to be taken care of and we’re now obviously immersed in final rehearsals. It’s going to be a great show and we’re delighted that just under 100 local performers of all age groups will be taking part,” she said. Within this large cast, seven young girls aged from seven to 15 years of age will open the show, playing the parts of Annie and her best friends in the New York City Orphanage. THE developer behind plans for a crematorium on the outskirts of Ennis has been asked by the planning authority to supply details of mitigation measures to reduce potential harmful emissions from the proposed development if granted planning permission. Concern has also been raised about the effects of the proposed development on nearby Ballybeg Lake. Fenloe Property Development Limited have applied to the local authority for permission to construct a chapel, crematorium unit, furnace and remembrance gardens and cemetery at Ballaghfadda West on the Kildysart Road. And according to backers of the plan it will bring an economic boost to the local economy if given the go-ahead. Clare County Council have requested that the developers submit further information and revised proposals before making a decision. Owen Ryan ENNIS musician Paul Quinn has clocked up hundreds of thousands of views of his arrangements on YouTube and is planning to record some of his own songs this summer. Recently, he put up his version of the national anthem played on acoustic guitar, which has well over 10,000 views and his versions of the theme tunes from The Wire and Game of Thrones have also racked up big numbers. Speaking about the views on YouTube, he says, “I started about two years ago and it’s kind of progressively gotten bigger and bigger; it’s up to about 700,000 views now. The Irish National Anthem one was featured on 2FM and that kind of exploded overnight, up to 12,000 or 13,000. I’ve just done ones I’ve liked from movies and TV shows and it got a gradual fan base and I’ll record original material in the summer.” He got some help when a link to his version of the Game …

A LOCAL  group, who have been bringing potentially life saving defibrillators to the streets of Ennis, have just installed their fourth device. The Ennis Defibrillator Committee is behind the installation of a new defibrillator at Roslevan this week. And there are plans to provide four more in the future with a fundraising quiz planned for next Thursday in the West County Hotel. According to the fundraising committee chairman Paul O’Shea, “Each defibrillator costs €2,300 and the committee have raised enough money to purchase four units. These units are positioned at key locations throughout Ennis. We can’t believe that in these hard times, that we have now purchased four units. The generosity of the Clare public is astounding. In addition, Ennis is in the process of achieving the status of ‘Heart Safe Town’ the much coveted award from the Irish Heart Foundation.” The fund raising committee includes the Clare Red Cross, Ennis Chamber, Avondale Soccer club and other businesses/community groups. FIVE local women, all members of the Travelling community, have enrolled as third level college students for the first time in their lives in a collaboration between Ennis CDP, Limerick Institute of Technology and the HSE. And while they admit there is a sense of trepidation, there is also plenty of excitement with all of the women looking forward to facing the challenge ahead. Margaret Gannon, Mary Frances Joyce, Bridget Mongans, Bridget McDonagh and Mary McDonagh met with one of their lecturers from LIT, Dr Frank Houghton, this week. Dr Houghton, the Director of the newly established Health & Social Research (HEALR) Group in Limerick Institute of Technology, delivered a four hour session on “Primary Health Care and its impact” in Ennis to the new students who proudly hold their LIT student cards.
