By CAROL BYRNE THE new Dublin Coach service which started motoring recently from Ennis to the capital will result in up to 50 permanent jobs when the company wheels out its new Quicktours packages from Ennis. Speaking at the launch of the newly extended service, Dublin Coach owner and Kilrush native John O’Sullivan said he views Ennis as a “tourism hub”. At the event held at the Templegate Hotel on Thursday it was highlighted that the route created a gateway between Ennis, Limerick, Kildare and Dublin enabling the free flow of visitors and greater partnership between each location. “Ultimately this service provides Ennis and Clare with the platform to maximise on the increased arriving into Shannon and Dublin Airport but equally the domestic consumer who is responsible for the greatest volume,” a spokesperson for Dublin Coach. By CAROL BYRNE UP to 17 members of Ennis Garda Station, including the county’s Chief Superintendent, participated in a shave or dye event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society on Friday. The Ennis station is one of the few garda stations to have embarked on a shave or dye event, since the initiative began. Organised by community garda Deirdre O’Doherty the decision was made to theme the shave or dye in line with Ennis being the first town to secure a purple flag status. As a result those getting their hair dyed will have it dyed purple. Speaking about Friday’s initiative Garda O’Doherty said, “The main reason for organising it is because of the amount of people who have been touched by cancer. Even through our own station, a number of people have been touched by it. I was approached by one of my colleagues, who said I would be the one to take it on. I had thought …

The number of people on the live register in Clare declined slightly in February. According to figures from the Central Statistics Office, there were 9,242 people on the live register in the Banner county in February, compared to 9,418 in January. There were reductions in the number signing on at each of the live register offices, Ennis, Ennistymon and Kilrush. In Ennis, the numbers went from 5,167 to 5,085; in Ennistymon from 1,605 to 1,567; and in Kilrush from 1,318 to 1,271. There were 10,058 people signing on in Clare in February 2013, meaning there has been a reduction of 816 in 12 months, a drop of just over 8%.

An Ennis woman, who is playing a key role in a new US group advocating radical  treatments for chronic illnesses, has organised a biomedical seminar to help Irish parents. A number of high profile guest speakers will provide information about new treatments, which apparently bring about improvements for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attentin Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at the Auburn Lodge Hotel, Ennis on Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm.. There is no known medically proven cures for conditions like ASD and ADHD. Eileen Iorio, nee Jackson, who moved to America in 2004, became involved with Epidemic Answers (EA) having seen a trailer about the movie “Canary Kids” and her own first hand experience of witnessing how her son, Sean, who was on the ASD spectrum, benefit from these new treatments.   THE Ennis St Patrick’s Day parade, which took place in fine weather conditions, attracted a huge crowd along the route through the principal streets.  O’Connell Square, where they reviewing stand was sited, was thronged to capacity. There was plenty of music and dance in the parade and afterwards there was several hours of live entertainment at Market Street car park.

Despite the disappointment, those behind Ennis’ bid have already set their sights on 2016, saying they are “very hopeful” that their “strong application” will bring success for the town and the county. David Duggan ALMOST every town and city in Ireland has a recognisable symbol or emblem that best represents them. When you think of Dublin, you think of O’Connell Bridge or the GPO. When you think of Galway, you think of Eyre Square. The statue of Daniel O Connell, which stands high above Ennis on a pedestal, also became a trademark for the town and just like Belfast City Hall it was an established rallying point, which it has still remained up to the present day. The monument was constructed by William Carroll, a local builder and contractor, whose work can be seen thought town, which includes the Cathedral tower, the Franciscan Friary and several bridges which are still all in use today. The notion that nothing was ever built with out controversy is appropriate when discussing the construction of the O’Connell monument, which was completed fully in 1865. RECENT investments in the manufacture of new healthcare products at the Roche ( Ireland Ltd ) plant in Clarecastle, will support its parent company in retaining its position among the world’s top ten pharmaceutical companies. Ennis man, Gerry Cahill, who is managing director of the Clarecastle operation, said since the beginning of the year, they have been manufacturing Madapor, which is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and later on this year will commence making the newer drug Zelboraf, aimed at treating people with advanced melamoma skin cancer. The latest developments have been welcomed by the 245 Roche employees in Clarecastle, in addition to the significant number of contractors, who have been taken on to support the new products. Mr Cahill told The Clare Champion that one of the reasons Roche was selected by its parent company for the manufacture of Madapor and Zelboraf was because of the reputation which the Clarecastle site enjoys, as being a very reliable …
