A work of art in Ennis is being “defaced and disrespected” by being used as a location for storing commercial bins, it has been claimed. The mural artwork is situated close to the Friary and the tourist office and depicts a woman surrounded by colourful butterflies. However, the mural is being obscured by bins regularly being left in front. The location of commercial bins is something that has been of concern to both businesses in Ennis and the local authority in recent years. Plans are now underway by Clare County Council to remove commercial bins from the town centre, apart from collection times, which they say will deal with the blocking of the mural. A concerned member of the public, who contacted The Clare Champion, said, “I recently read about the vandalism of the work of art on Barrack Street and that there was outcry locally about what had been done. That was a terrible act of vandalism but, equally, …

Gardaí targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in Ennis have seized cocaine and cannabis following a planned operation today (Thursday). Shortly after midday, members of Clare Drugs Divisional Unit discovered a significant quantity of cocaine, with an estimated value in excess of €60,000, and cannabis, with an estimated value in excess of €20,000, pending analysis, in an open area near Clonmore Road. Follow up searches and investigation are currently taking place and a man in his 30s has been arrested and is currently in custody at Ennis Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking ) Act 1996.

Tourism Ireland has unveiled a new film about the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which was hosted in Ennis in 2016 and returns there in 2017. The film shows some of the highlights of the Fleadh Cheoil in 2016, including Irish dancers and traditional pub sessions in Ennis. The film captures the atmosphere of this great music festival – encouraging potential visitors around the world to come and find out more about Ireland’s incredible culture and sample the Fleadh Cheoil for themselves. The film is being promoted through Tourism Ireland’s social platforms, including Facebook (3.8 million fans worldwide), Twitter (379,000 followers) and YouTube.

A BRAZILIAN native who showed a “complete flagrant disregard” for the law, after admitting to charges of brothel-keeping in Ennis and Limerick, has been sentenced to a total of eight months in prison. Aulicete Camargo Walsh of Breskabeg, Clarina, County Limerick appeared before Ennis District Court  charged with two counts of brothel-keeping and one of using a false instrument. She was charged that being the tenant/lessee/occupier/person-in-charge of a premises at 18 Bank Square, Bindon Lane, she knowingly permitted it to be used as a brothel for the purpose of habitual prostitution on May 9, 2016. She was also charged with using a Portuguese driving licence, which she knew to be a false instrument. The accused was also charged with running a brothel at 6 Crosley House, Dock Road, Limerick on May 27, 2016. The court had previously heard that the 54-year-old grandmother was arrested on suspicion of brothel-keeping following a surveillance operation by gardaí. Three Romanian women in their 20s …

Minister For Employment and Small Business Pat Breen said he is satisfied that progress is now being made on the Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme as the project has gone to tender. “It is my understanding that the tender documents will be going out to contractors for pricing on Monday (yesterday). The tender period will be eight weeks, and pending no further complications, work is to commence on the ground in July,” said Minister Breen. “This third phase of the Ennis Flood Relief Scheme had been delayed due to technical difficulties, but I am pleased that the project is finally moving on,” added Minister Breen. “I understand the frustration of residence effected by flooding in this area of Ennis as they await the project to begin, a frustration that must be multiplied in recent days during the inclement weather, and I sincerely hope this is the beginning of the end of flooding issues for these people. “I have been working …

LAST week, Ennis Triathlon Club hosted triathlon Olympian Bryan Keane, who participated in a club training day and launched the club’s 2017 race event calendar, consisting of a duathlon on Sunday, March 26 and the iTri Triathlon on July 22. Bryan Keane represented Ireland in the triathlon at the Rio Olympics in 2016 after making a comeback from a potentially career-ending injury he suffered when he was knocked from his bike while out training. Following two years of rehabilitation, Keane came back to his best and became the first Irish man to stand on a World Cup podium. He has risen up the rankings throughout the past number of seasons and qualified for the Rio Olympics along with the world’s top 50 triathletes. Bryan also represented Ireland in cycling and running in his early career. ENNIS is set for a financial boost, with the arrival of a major livestock event to the Clare Co-operative Marts later this year, The Clare Champion can confirm. The Commercial Cattle Exhibitors Society’s winter fair will be held in the county capital in October, the first time the event has been held in the West of Ireland. Organisers estimate that Ennis’ hosting of the winter fair on October 22 and 23 will bring in around €250,000 to the local economy. Around 1,000 people are expected to attend, with 200 exhibitors also taking part in the event, which will see farmers gaining access to a marketplace where some weanlings are likely to sell for in excess of €5,000. This year will mark the 21st annual showcase, which regularly attracts both Irish beef producers and overseas visitors.
