Dean and Dylan Casey ran first and second as Ennis Track secured team gold in the Junior Men’s grade at the ECCC Cross Country Championships. Niall Murphy produced a gritty display of racing as he crossed the line in 11th place on a morning where Ennis Track simply obliterated the field. Murphy was fourth inside the opening kilometre but despite falling back slightly, he displayed admirable heart to hold on and help his team win gold. A STALWART of the Clare athletics scene received a congratulatory phone call from Olympic hero Kellie Harrington after receiving a national award for his work. Ennis Track AC’s Gerry Hayes recently received a SPAR Ireland Mentor Award for his unselfish hard work with the club. The president of the club was one of 10 people to receive this award as each winner scooped €1,000 for their club. The phone call from Harrington came after Hayes expressed his hope some of the young talent coming through can represent the club and their country at an Olympic Games. “I was overjoyed when I got the news. I never expected it. I do what I love. I’ve done volunteer work all my life and all my family have volunteered too so it is unexpected. It’s a huge honour.” He states his love of athletics was something he possessed from an early age. “I have a love of sport especially athletics. I found running …

ENNIS Tidy Towns are staying on track when it comes to their efforts to keep the county capital looking good. The local voluntary organisation have once again joined forces with Ennis Track Athletic Club to encourage youngsters to think reduce, reuse, recycle. Their latest initiative aims to get plastic litter on the run by developing colourful re-usable bags for runners and track shoes. Cormac McCarthy, chairman of Ennis Tidy Towns explains, “Ennis Tidy Towns has continued their collaboration with Ennis Track in driving sustainability as part of the clubs activities. Two years ago this involved supplying the club with reusable bottles which were given to participants in their kids road race. “This year we worked with them to develop re-usable bags for dirty runners and track shoes. It was observed that lots of shoes were being place in single use plastic bags and given the dirty nature of the shoes, these bags were being disposed of. The new drawstring bags …

Clare athletics was rocked this week with the news that long-serving official, James Sexton, had stepped down from his role as public relations officer for the county organisation. The decision was communicated in writing to the board secretary, Vincent McCarthy, at the weekend. It is expected to be discussed at a meeting of Clare athletics scheduled for Monday next. The Moy native, a member of Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare AC, took the decision because he is dissatisfied with the number of transfers that are going to Ennis Track AC. Speaking to The Clare Champion, Sexton expressed anger and disappointment that “athletes are being taken from the smaller clubs around the county and this isn’t fair. Nothing is being done about it”. Responding to a query from The Clare Champion, Clare athletics chairman Michael Lillis said, “We have received the letter and will be discussing it on Monday night.
