O’Connell Street pedestrianisation to end on October 22

Traffic will once again flow down O’Connell Street in Ennis later this month as Clare County Council ends the temporary pedestrianisation of the street. In a statement issued this afternoon, Friday, October 13, the local authority said the period of pedestrianisation will come to an end on October 22. Earlier this year, the council announced its intention to extend the action until January 7, 2024. Following this announcement, Clare County Council received more than 100 letters of objection from local business people and residents. “Temporary pedestrianisation measures currently in place for O’Connell Street, Ennis, will end on Sunday, October 22, at 4:30pm,” said a council spokesperson. “This is in line with the road closure notice advertised in February 2023. As outlined in this notice, these measures were intended to be in place until January 7, 2024, or until the O’Connell Street Public Realm works commenced, whichever date would fall first.”

Road closure to facilitate temporary pedestrianisation in Ennis

CLARE County Council has announced that the main street in Ennis will be closed to traffic for a period each day from this Friday to facilitate temporary pedestrianisation. The Council indicated on Twitter that O’Connell Street, Ennis, will be closed to traffic from O’Connell Square to the junction with Station Road, Friday, April 8, from 11:30am to 5pm, Monday-Sunday, seven days per week, to facilitate the introduction of temporary pedestrianisation. This road closure will remain in place until the commencement of the Ennis Public Realm Works, currently anticipated to commence on Monday, May 9, 2022. There will be no through road from Abbey Street to O’Connell Street for the duration of the closure. Diversion will be at O’Connell Square, at the junction of Bank Place and O’Connell Square.

Large majority favours pedestrianisation in Ennis town centre

A LARGE majority of respondents to an extensive Clare County Council survey has indicated it would like to see some form of pedestrianisation in Ennis immediately. A total of 1,796 completed surveys were received and overall, 71.2% of all respondents stated they would like to see some form of pedestrianisation ‘immediately’; 20.3% in the ‘medium/long term dependent on provision of new infrastructure/service’ and 8.5% indicated ‘no-never’. The result was much closer between business owners surveyed, 54 of whom completed the poll. Some 38.9% favoured introduction of pedestrianisation immediately, 24.1% in the medium to long term, 37% selected No/Never. Of the 204 respondents over 65 years of age, 67.6% favoured the introduction of pedestrianisation immediately, 21.1% in the medium to long term, 11.3% selected No/Never. There were 102 respondents declared as ‘having mobility issues’ of whom 47.1% favoured introduction of pedestrianisation immediately, 21.6% in the medium to long term, 31.4% selected No/Never.
