Ennis schoolchildren swot up on their entrepreneurial skills

IS THERE a budding Denis O’Brien lurking in a fifth or sixth class in the Banner County? Starting next school term, the answer will be revealed, when a unique initiative, aimed at identifying and nurturing entrepreneurs in Clare over the next two school years, is introduced to the county. The venture, which will help identify the Clare entrepreneurs of tomorrow through a programme delivered in primary school classrooms, was launched in the county this week. The Junior Entrepreneurial Programme (JEP) for primary schoolchildren in Clare will offer teachers and students the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship and take part in practical exercises, designed to complement their creative thinking, problem-solving, presentation, writing and teamwork. The programme is designed to help children discover their own strengths and skills and encourage them to develop creativity and money management. Education Minister opens new “Nash”

THE Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn this Friday officially opened a new school for Ennis National School. The project cost in the region of €6.7 million. The school, at Ashrine, Kilrush Road in Ennis, was provided with a grant from the department and was further funded by the board of management to the tune of approximately €300,0000 to provie a larger general purpose room, changing rooms and the installation of a playing pitch. It is about a mile from the old “Nash” at the Carmody Street/Kilrush Road junjction. Speaking at the school, Minister Quinn said, “I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to aboard of management, staff, parents and the wider community are all to be congratulated for their hard work which made this new school possible”. Ruairi Quinn to open new Ennis NS

THE new Ennis National School will be officially opened next month by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn. As well as the minister, the official opening on May 16 will also be attended by Bishop Kieran O’Reilly. A series of activities and events have been organised for the day to mark the occasion. Among these will be the publication of a new book exploring the history of Ennis National School. The new state of the art school at Ashline opened its doors to its first pupils back in August. Among the many benefits of the school’s new location is the greater ease of access and increased parking. There was a concerted effort between Ennis Town Council, Clare County Council, An Garda Síochána and the school authorities prior to the school’s opening relating to the Travel Plan. And it is hoped that sustainable travel methods – walking, cycling, ‘walking bus’, car-pooling – will be used by increased numbers of students in keeping …
