Clare Creche Closed Due to E. Coli Outbreak

A COUNTY Clare créche has been forced to close its doors after a number of cases of E.coli were detected. In a statement issued to The Clare Champion today [Friday] the HSE has confirmed that it has been necessary to temporarily close a créche in the county as a result of a number of linked cases of Verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) infection being detected at the childcare facility. This they say has been done “in accordance with national guidance*, and with the agreement of the crèche management, in order to break the cycle of transmission of infection among the children”. It is understood that the West Clare based crèche is temporarily closed pending screening of all children and staff for VTEC. Parents have been advised that should their child develop diarrhoea, especially bloody diarrhoea, they should seek medical attention from their general practitioner or Shannondoc at 1850 212 999. Good Water Quality status for Clare bathing areas

THE report by the Environmental Protection Agency on Bathing Water Quality shows that each of Clare’s 11 bathing areas were deemed to be compliant with mandatory water quality levels in 2013. Bathing waters were classified into three categories, namely ‘Good’, ‘Sufficient’ and ‘Poor’. The classification system is based on the levels of E. Coli and intestinal enterococci detected in the bathing water during the 2013 bathing season. All 11 bathing areas around Clare were adjudged to have ‘Good Water Quality’ having complied with EU Guide and Mandatory levels, including Ballyalla Lake, on the outskirts of  Ennis, which was deemed to only have ‘Sufficient Water Quality’ in 2012. The other bathing water areas are White Strand (Milltown Malbay), Ballycuggeran (Lough Derg), Cappa Pier (Kilrush), Bishopsquarter, White Strand (Doonbeg), Kilkee, Spanish Point, Lahinch, Fanore and Mountshannon (Lough Derg).
