Bookmaker reacts to ‘Champion election poll

FOLLOWING the publication of the Clare Champion-commissioned 2016 Clare Constituency General Election Poll, Paddy Power Betfair have reacted by making significant changes to the odds of offer for the candidates. “Following a poll from The Clare Champion our prices have drastically changed. Two sitting TDs (Joe Carey (FG) and Michael McNamara (Lab) are in massive trouble,” commented a spokesman for the bookmakers. The odds for Pat Breen and Timmy Dooley have tightened from 1/12 to an almost unbackable 1/25. Independent Dr Michael Harty has moved in from 5/4 to 1/4, with the odds on Sinn Fein’s Noleen Moran shortening significantly from 10/1 to 8/13. Michael McDonagh (FF) has also come in from 9/4 to 6/4, while sitting TD Joe Carey (FG) has drifted from 1/8 to 10/3, the other sitting TD under pressure, Michael McNamara (Lab) out from 5/2 to 4/1. Ann Norton (Ind) has drifted in the market from 3/1 to 14/1, Clare Colleran Mollloy (FF) 9/1 to 14/1, …

Poll predicts two new TDs

A MAJOR political upset could be on the cards in General Election 2016 in Clare should the results of a Clare Champion-commissioned opinion poll be replicated on February 26. Using a sample ballot paper, the poll, undertaken by the marketing department at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT), indicates that Independent candidate Dr Michael Harty and Sinn Féin’s Noeleen Moran are poised to take seats, at the expense of sitting TDs, Joe Carey of Fine Gael and Labour’s Michael McNamara. Fianna Fáil’s Timmy Dooley and Fine Gael’s Pat Breen are effectively home and dry. With national polls indicating that the outcome of General Election 2016 is poised delicately in the balance, the Clare result could be a major contributory factor in determining the shape of the next government in the 32nd Dáil. The closeness of the contest at national level has been heightened by the reduction in the number of seats by eight to 158. Conducted last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, …

Dr Harty is new GP Dáil candidate

Kilmihil-based GP Michael Harty has been selected as the official Clare GP candidate to contest the forthcoming general election. The Clare Champion can reveal that Dr Harty will officially launch his general election campaign for a “rural revolution” at a public meeting in Corofin community hall this Tuesday night at 8pm. Speaking to the Clare Champion, Dr Harty confirmed he has been selected as the “no doctor, no village” candidate as part of GPs national campaign to restore vital financial supports to rural practice. While no other doctors have officially announced they are making a Dáil bid, Dr Harty may be joined by other medical colleagues supporting this national campaign in Galway, Mayo and other counties in the West of Ireland over the coming days. His dramatic entry into the Dáil race comes despite a two-week deadline presented to Government deputies to secure a rescue package for rural practice at a public meeting in Corofin last Thursday. They were …
