A  North Clare group collected their prize of €556,194 in National Lottery offices in Dublin on Tuesday (November 4). The “Rum for Me” syndicate, so-called as spiced rum is their drink of choice, raised a glass to celebrate their big win after matching five numbers and one lucky star number in last Tuesday’s EuroMillions draw. The lucky group comprises seven winners, aged 26 to 55, who live and work in the Lisdoonvarna, Corofin and Doolin areas. Paddling from Doolin to Liscannor beneath the Cliffs of Moher will be among the challenges along the Wild Atlantic Way highlighted as one of the world’s outdoor activity destinations in a US TV series, Facing Waves. The show is broadcast into eight million US homes through Outside Television’s TV network, which reaches one of the most sought after demographics in the adventure travel world. The episode featuring Ireland will be broadcast early next year to over 50 million homes, as it is syndicated to over 25 other countries. The ‘First Lady’ of stand up paddle fitness, Nikki Gregg from Ohio is currently in Ireland filming with Dave O’Hara of SUPForAll (Sligo) along The Wild Atlantic Way. Filming is concentrated on the Sligo area and the famous Mullaghmore wave; weather permitting filming will also include paddling from Doolin to Liscannor beneath the Cliffs of Moher. Phil Spencer, co-presenter of the hit Channel 4 TV series Location Location Location, and Classic FM, one of Britain’s largest radio stations, has linked up with Tourism Ireland to showcase Clare and the Wild Atlantic Way as the ideal ‘location’ to British holidaymakers this autumn. As part of its autumn campaign in Britain, Tourism Ireland has been working with Classic FM and Phil Spencer to produce four online films – including one film all about the Wild Atlantic Way. The films will be promoted on the Classic FM website over a four-week period, until mid-October. The campaign is expected to reach about 6.5 million people across Britain. The Wild Atlantic film features great footage of the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and O’Brien’s Tower, Doolin and Ballyvaughan. SEVEN people involved in an illegal “cruise and drift” event in North Clare last March, organised on Facebook, have been fined €750 and disqualified from driving for six months having shown “total disregard for human beings”. Wayne Danaher, aged 19, with an address at Snipe Lodge, Knockagulla, Lisdoonvarna and 20-year-old Jennifer Canavan, of Derrymore, Lahinch pleaded guilty at Ennis District Court on Wednesday evening to a public order charge of engaging in offensive conduct in public on March 8. Meanwhile, Gabriel Weck, aged 21, of Bealcragga, Connolly, 27-year-old Shaun Larkin of 22 Inis Carraig, Ennis, Sean Keane, aged 19, of Ballyhannon, Quin, 21-year-old Rory Downes of Clonakilla, Kilmilhil, and Kevin Baker, aged 18, of Finn Trá, Miltown Malbay pleaded guilty to careless driving on the same date. THE tourism industry is up 20% on last year in some parts of the county. As the summer draws to a close, former chairman of the Irish Hotels Federation and Lahinch hotelier, Michael Vaughan, has said that, on average across the county, it is up by 5% or 6% and that the hotel sector could be back to 2007 peak levels within the next two years. “It was slow enough at the early part of the year but it improved as we got towards the main months and certainly the Wild Atlantic Way has brought tourists out along the coast, there is no doubt about that. Certainly there has been an improvement of at least 5% and 6% on last year and last year was up too, so we are getting closer to where we were before the bust came about. THE Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have begun an investigation into a work place accident in which 38-year-old TJ McDonagh died in Liscannor on Wednesday evening. Gardai said that at around 7.30pm at Kilconnell, Liscannor, a 38 year old man was found unconscious in a shed. He was brought to University Hospital Galway and subsequently pronounced dead. Mr McDonagh will repose at St Brigid’s Church in Liscannor on Friday evening, while funeral mass will be on Saturday at 11am, followed by burial in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Doolin. [doptg id=”38″] It started with just the germ of an idea at a Weight Watchers meeting, where members gather each week to be weighed and to gain encouragement to keep losing weight. One of the members, Shelly Galvin, suggested that a social outing would be a good way to increase morale and fellowship. By the end of the class, the members decided that they would tackle the walk along the Cliffs of Moher, with sponsorship from The Clare Champion. As a result, over 50 Weight Watcher members from classes around the county descended on Liscannor last Saturday to tackle the 18km route. Although the weather forecasts were iffy, the day couldn’t have been better, with blue skies and a cooling breeze coming in from the sea. THE husband of a Doolin woman who passed away from ovarian cancer earlier this year will lead an entourage of over 200 Harley-Davidson motorcyclists from around the world through the Burren this weekend. Harley-Davidson owners from across Ireland, the UK and the United States will descend on the North Clare village of Doolin this Friday for the Doolin Harley Fest 2014 which continues through until Sunday. The festival is being held in aid of the Marie Clancy McDonagh Foundation, set up by the family and friends of local woman Marie Clancy McDonagh who died in May from ovarian cancer at the age of 38. Marie’s husband James and his two brothers, Mark and John as well as local man Jimmy Boyle are motorcycle enthusiasts and have partnered with Hotel Doolin to organise the festival, which they hope will become an annual event.
