Saturday update: 174 new Covid-19 cases confirmed

TODAY’S rate of confirmed cases of Covid-19 is 174, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). Clare is among the counties to record increases in the number of positive cases. Seventeen of the cases confirmed today are spread between Clare and 12 other counties (Carlow, Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Mayo, Roscommon, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow). 110 cases are located in Kildare, 27 in Dublin, 7 in Cork, 7 in Offaly, 6 in Meath, the HPSC said. The latest Department of Health Data puts the number of confirmed cases in Clare currently at 401. The figures issued this evening (August 8) also show that one patient diagnosed with Covid-19 in this country has died, bringing the death toll to a total of 1,772. Corporate help needed to melt Ebola ‘iceberg’

COMPANIES in Clare should “step up and provide corporate support” to West Africa, as it fights to contain the outbreak of Ebola, an Inagh man leading one NGO’s response to the disease in the region has said. Damien Queally of Plan Ireland has just returned to his base in Senegal from a visit to the charity’s projects in the three worst-affected countries. “We are looking for medical personnel, good solid project managers who are able to keep multiple activities moving at the same time, logisticians. It would be great if some companies would step up and provide corporate support with some of the supplies that are needed.
