Man arrested heading to Kilkee beach

A FILE is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after a man was arrested for failing to follow instructions to return home when  detected by Shannon Gardaí, last Thursday, at a checkpoint set up as part of Operation Fanacht.  The man was travelling with a passenger and told officers he was going to Kilkee beach. When he failed to heed the advice of Gardaí to turn around, he was arrested. The incident, according to Superintendent John Galvin was an isolated one, with arrests being a “last resort” in the enforcement of the Covid-19 travel restrictions.  Superintendent Galvin said that the Operation, which saw a number of permanent and rolling checkpoints operate across the country between Wednesday, April 8 and Monday, April 13, found a very high level of compliance in this county with the public health guidelines.  “We found that very, very few people travelled over the Easter Weekend, things were very low key and there …

Judge tells DPP ‘to get on her bike’

A judge has told a senior garda to tell the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Claire Loftus “to get her on bicycle” concerning directions for four alleged burglars. At Ennis District Court, Inspector Tom Kennedy sought a further adjournment in the case against the four alleged burglars of a rural farmhouse in Ballyea, where a 95-year-old man was asleep last January. Initially, two of the four were refused bail in the district court but all four, all with Limerick addresses, appeared in court on bail. Inspector Kennedy sought the adjournment for the DPP to make directions in the case but, in response, Judge Patrick Durcan quipped, “Tell the DPP to get on her bicycle”. Inspector Kennedy said the cases in respect of all four could be adjourned to Ennis District Court to April 25. Arrest in prostitution operation

A person has been arrested as part of an operation targeting prostitution in the Mid-West region, following Garda searches in Ennis and Limerick in recent weeks. Ennis gardaí involved in the operation carried out a series of searches of premises in the town and on the back of this, one person was arrested last weekend. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution in relation to the matter. Clare gardaí are working in conjunction with other garda divisions across the Mid-West as part of the operation and their investigations are ongoing. By Carol Byrne
