Clare teens highlight dangers of ‘sexting’

Clare Comhairle na nÓg will make a presentation to the Oireachtas Committee for Youth Affairs next Wednesday on a campaign they have developed to educate teenagers on cyber safety and the dangers of sexting. The group, which comprises a group of teenages (13 to 18 year olds) from all over Clare, last year hosted a “Sexting Peer Education Workshop”. The workshop is based on an initiative by the Icelandic-based Youth Council of Samfés which participated in an exchange with Clare Comhairle na nÓg in 2016 and 2017. Next week’s presentation follows new research showing that almost half of Irish teenagers in their final year at school say they have participated in sexting, which is defined as the sharing of sexual text, video, and photographic content using phone, social networks, apps and other technologies. A busy Christmas for Childline

Childline, the ISPCC’s listening service for all children and young people in Ireland was busy on Christmas Day. A total of 57 dedicated volunteers from across Ireland provided support to hundreds of children who needed to talk. Christmas Day saw ISPCC volunteers listening to and responding to 1,208 calls, texts and messages from children through Childline’s 24 hour telephone, text and online service, with over 73% of these coming from male contacts. Childline faced an unprecedented funding crisis in 2014, which threatened its ability to maintain the 24 hour nature of the service. Childline reached out to the general public through its emergency appeal and the people of Ireland responded wholeheartedly with donations of €400,000; a reflection of the place that Childline holds in the hearts and minds of the Irish public. €.5m grants for youth projects

€.5 MILLION capital funding has been made available for small to medium capital grants to youth projects in disadvantaged communities in 2015. Grants will be available for the up-grade or replacement of equipment, for example, computer/software updates, sports equipment, multi-media equipment, furnishing upgrades. Details of the scheme and how to apply are on the Department of Children and Youth Affairs website at www.dcya.gov.ie. Dr James Reilly TD, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs said, “I am very pleased to have this funding available to provide to youth services which do vital work in some of the more disadvantaged communities in our society.
