“I’ll miss him forever”

“IT’S very poignant that this photo is here, given that our family is living on both sides of the Atlantic, between America and Ireland, and we come through here often, and to think that Dad will be here to welcome us and send us off is very, very special and it means an awful lot.” These were the words of Brendan Grace’s daughter Amanda on Tuesday, as a photograph of the late and much-loved comedian was unveiled and put on the Wall of Fame at Shannon Airport, in the presence of many members of his family. Brendan was a long-time friend and supporter of Shannon Airport and he met with management earlier this year to organise adding his photograph to the gallery but illness prevented it being progressed at the time. However, at the wishes of his family following his sad loss in July, a 4ft x 4ft picture is now in place. “He was close to 50 years coming …

Death in Bunratty and the long search for answers

“He clocked me,  he clocked me,  he clocked me,” The dying words of Pat Nugent, made to his colleague Declan O’Neill. EIGHTEEN and 21 years of age when their brother Pat breathed his last, John and Martin Nugent are now in their 50s, still looking to find out what happened in Bunratty in the early hours of February 11, 1984. One thing is for certain, an incident there that morning brought about the death of their brother Pat. They believe that some people know what happened but they have never been open about it, never offered the Nugent family that much comfort. It’s a case that has resonated for decades, with the uncertainty and tragedy mixed with the fact that two off-duty guards were involved, meaning that it really captured the public’s interest and attention, while the long wait of the Nugents for truth, let alone justice, would evoke empathy in the most detached of people. In October of 1985, …

Cyclist death was not due to road traffic collision

THE death of a cyclist whose body was found on the old Crusheen-Gort road (R458) this evening was not caused by a crash, Gardai believe. It is thought that the man, who was in his 50s, may have died due to a medical complication, and the cause of death may become apparent after a post mortem takes place on Tuesday. The man was part of a group who were on a long distance cycle in support of charity. They were due to conclude the day’s cycling in Gort and spend the night there. The man’s body was discovered a couple of kilometres to the Clare side of the county boundary with Galway. The road was closed for a period of time after the body was found but has since reopened.

Limerick 4-21 Clare 0-33 (after two periods of extra time) Limerick won 7 to 6 in a sudden death free taking contest Clare’s involvement in the 2018 Allianz hurling league ended in dramatic fashion at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick this evening. History was made when a league quarter final was decided for the first time by a free taking shoot out which went to sudden death. It’s a piece of history that Clare would prefer not to have been part of but its the format that is in place this season as the authorities seek to get competitions completed in a shorter time frame. This latest clash of arch rivals and Shannonside neighbours Clare and Limerick ebbed and flowed over one hundred minutes at the end of which the sides were still level. This was the eleventh time that the sides were level in this tie, the first having come twenty three minutes into the second half. Both sides …
