Ennis Track coach: European bronze ‘huge for Dean’

Ennis Track coach Pat Hogan has hailed the performance of Dean Casey after the Ennis youngster secured a bronze medal at the European Cross Country Championships last weekend. Hogan freely admits that even though the focus with Casey was on producing a strong performance, the result is a huge boost for the Ennis man. “Ultimately sport is about results. It’s a results based game. Someone picks up the paper and they look at the result first. Everything a coach does is grey but it’s black and white once you step foot on the line. On Sunday evening he was third and that’s all that matters. “He worked his way through the race. Dean kept in the pack because it was a very challenging course before he managed to move clear on the last hill. It’s huge for him. Casey hails ‘unreal’ result as he claims European U20 bronze

Ennis Track athlete Dean Casey secured a bronze medal at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships on Sunday.  The Ennis man produced a lung bursting run to secure third place as the Irish U20 team scooped a silver medal. In his post race interview over in Italy, Casey stated: “For me it’s just unreal. I came thirteenth last year when I know I wasn’t the best so to come third this year shows how much training I’ve done.” Fellow Irish athlete Nick Griggs finished second as he was pipped on the line. Casey ran the 6km race in 17 minutes and 46 seconds. He finished six seconds behind the winner from Great Britain Will Barnicoat and five behind Griggs. He was eight seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Sam Mills in fourth. Dean Casey shines on another big day for Ennis Track

Ennis athlete Dean Casey led the way on a successful day for his club at the 123.ie National Cross Country Championships on Sunday with a silver medal performance. Along with Casey’s second place finish in the U20 competition, Ennis Track’s Junior side secured gold as they progressed through to the ECCC Cross Country Championships next February, a competition which they won earlier this year. Meanwhile, Casey’s second placed finish helped him secure a spot on the Irish Junior team that will be competing at the European Cross Country Championships next month in Italy. He was part of the Irish team that secured silver at these Championships last year in Dublin. Mark Hanrahan has also been selected on the same team as he secured fourth on Sunday. The top three finishers in each age grade automatically qualified for the Irish squad but with a six-man team competing in Italy, Hanrahan’s strong showing was enough to convince the selectors that he should …

Casey shows ‘maturity beyond his years’ with world U20 display

Dean Casey (Ennis Track Club) has come thirteenth in the men’s 5,000m World U20 Athletics Championship final. The Clare man produced a strong, tactical performance throughout the 5,000m, showing a maturity in his running far beyond years. Casey maintained his position within the leading pack of the 22-man competition, crossing the line with 14:37.79 on the clock. The gold medal winner Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune crossed the line in a time of 14:03.05. After a successful opening day for Team Ireland at the World U20 Championships, the Irish singlet returns to the Cali stadium tomorrow at 6:05pm with Lucy McGlynn taking to the women’s 400mH heats.

Ennis athlete to compete at World U20 Championships

Ennis Track athlete Dean Casey has been selected to represent Ireland at the World U20 Athletics Championships next month. Casey is one of eight athletes chosen to represent his country with the prodigious talent set to compete in the 5,000m event in Colombia. The selection is a huge fillip for Ennis Track and his coach Pat Hogan. Dean’s father Ger is also involved in coaching within the club while his mother Maureen is PRO of Ennis Track. Dean has enjoyed a stellar year so far as he helped his club become Junior men’s champions at the ECCC Cross Country Championships in February. He finished first in this race with his brother Dylan securing second spot as Ennis Track shocked Europe with a brilliant team display. Ennis Track’s Dean Casey secured a new Irish U-20 10,000m record last weekend in London, the St Flannan’s College student runnning a time of 28.57.34 at the Highgate Harriers Night of 10,000m PBs Meet. Casey takes over from Abdel Laadjel (29:23.92) who broke Frank Greally’s 52-year-old record in March. The record-breaking performance from Casey continues a remarkable period for the young Ennis star. Dean and Dylan Casey ran first and second as Ennis Track secured team gold in the Junior Men’s grade at the ECCC Cross Country Championships. Niall Murphy produced a gritty display of racing as he crossed the line in 11th place on a morning where Ennis Track simply obliterated the field. Murphy was fourth inside the opening kilometre but despite falling back slightly, he displayed admirable heart to hold on and help his team win gold. The Casey brothers, Dean and Dylan, finished in first and second as Ennis Track shocked Europe with a brilliant team display.
