DAVY Fitzgerald is to step down as manager of the Wexford senior hurling team. The Sixmilebridge man has called time on his five-year tenure at the helm of the Leinster side, whose involvement in the championship was ended by his native Clare this month. Fitzgerald, in a statement released by Wexford GAA said, “I have informed the County Board that I will not be in a position to continue in my role as Bainisteoir of the Wexford Senior Hurling team. “The main reason for this is down to the six hour round trip from my home in Sixmilebridge, which I have done for the last five years. “I have never felt closer or happier with any team in all my years coaching and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of my five years in Wexford. “It has been an absolute privilege and an honour to have worked with every one of the players during my time in Wexford. A “one-size-fits-all approach” to training was instrumental in Brendan Bugler’s decision to retire from inter-county hurling at the end of 2017. In an article he penned last week for AIB’s website, the Whitegate man said he was annoyed at this approach to training. “Motivation and enthusiasm are two key ingredients to becoming an inter-county player. CYBER bullying is the “most cowardly assault” on young people, Davy Fitzgerald has claimed, while he called for the Irish Government to take the lead on stamping it out. Addressing 300 transition-year students at the Shannon Foynes Company Compass Transition Year Schools Competition final on Friday, the new Wexford manager said that one of the most effective ways of bringing cyber bullying to an end would be to shut down internet anonymity. ALMOST 20 Clare hurlers will be involved in quarter-final action in the Fitzgibbon Cup next week, following results in Round 3 on Tuesday. Limerick’s three third-level institutions have all qualified for the knock-out stage of the competition. Title holders Mary Immaculate College drew with IT Carlow (0-18 each), with Eoin Quirke (Whitegate), Colm Galvin (Clonlara) and Michael O’Neill (Kilmaley) in their first 15. Hosts of this year’s finals weekend, NUI Galway also drew on Tuesday when they played Cork IT. DAVY Fitzgerald has stepped down as Clare senior hurling manager after five years in the position during which time he led Clare to the All-Ireland senior title in 2013 and to the National league title earlier this year. The Sixmilebridge man’s decision to vacate the post, despite still having a year of his current term to run, has come following a meeting of around 30 players on Monday night at the Inn in Dromoland. While a vote wasn’t taken, there is general agreement that the players were evenly divided on the issue. A formal statement on Wednesday evening confirmed “Davy Fitzgerald has informed the Clare County Board that he will not be seeking reappointment to the position of Clare Senior Hurling Manager for 2017”. DAVY Fitzgerald is expected to continue as manager of the Clare senior hurling team for another year. After a four-month break, Clare GAA will hold a county board meeting next Tuesday at their meeting room in Caherlohan where, it is expected, a number of inter-county team managements for the coming season will be appointed. Whether or not Fitzgerald would seek another term in charge of the senior hurlers has been a topic of discussion since the team bowed out of the championship in July. Fitzgerald, who spent some time in hospital in the lead-up to Clare’s game with Galway, has said on a number of occasions since then that he will take time to decide on his future. He did attend a number of the club championship games last weekend, as did selectors Louis Mulqueen and Michael Browne. The expectation is that he will seek to continue as team manager.
