Davy Fitzgerald calls time on stint as Wexford boss

DAVY Fitzgerald is to step down as manager of the Wexford senior hurling team. The Sixmilebridge man has called time on his five-year tenure at the helm of the Leinster side, whose involvement in the championship was ended by his native Clare this month. Fitzgerald, in a statement released by Wexford GAA said, “I have informed the County Board that I will not be in a position to continue in my role as Bainisteoir of the Wexford Senior Hurling team. “The main reason for this is down to the six hour round trip from my home in Sixmilebridge, which I have done for the last five years. “I have never felt closer or happier with any team in all my years coaching and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of my five years in Wexford. “It has been an absolute privilege and an honour to have worked with every one of the players during my time in Wexford. There were ups …

Clare face Davy’s Wexford again in All-Ireland qualifiers

FOR the second year in succession Clare will face Wexford in the All-Ireland hurling series. This morning’s live draw pitted the Banner against the Yellow Bellies in the round one qualifier at 1.30pm Saturday in Semple Stadium Thurles. Once more, former team-mates and now rivals Brian Lohan and Davy Fitzgerald will face off, providing extra spice to the clash. Clare v Wexford 🤙🏼😂 You couldn’t write it The man above has a warped sense of humour — Eddie Brennan (@NedzerB13) July 12, 2021 The rancour between the two teams and coaches in recent years will have been exacerbated by the Covid controversy that ensued when Clare players were forced to isolate following this year’s league clash in Ennis after being named as close contacts of a Wexford player who contracted the virus. Wexford took the points that day, but Clare took the honours last year when the sides met in the qualifiers. In the other round 1 tie, Waterford will …

TWO ultra-fit Clare families will put their strength and stamina to the test on national television over the coming weeks in a bid to be crowned Ireland’s Fittest Family. The hit TV show, which already features Clare man and Wexford hurling boss, Davy Fitzgerald, will see the Kulczynski family from Ennis and the O’Halloran family from Newpark, Kilkishen go through extreme endurance challenges in settings from ski slopes to bogs. Over the course of the series, which started last Sunday on RTÉ One, a total of 16 families will be whittled down to four for a gruelling final contest, from which only one winning team can emerge. With highly impressive fitness credentials, the Kulczynski family are hotly tipped to stay in contention until the very end. Bugler lays it all out

A “one-size-fits-all approach” to training was instrumental in Brendan Bugler’s decision to retire from inter-county hurling at the end of 2017. In an article he penned last week for AIB’s website, the Whitegate man said he was annoyed at this approach to training. “Motivation and enthusiasm are two key ingredients to becoming an inter-county player. It’s grand when you’re 19 or 20 years of age and you’re sitting there in a lecture hall counting down the hours until you can go training, buzzing to get out onto the field, irrespective of what time of the year it is, no responsibilities; but that can’t go on forever. “Physically, the pre-season hard slog was never a problem but as the seasons passed, it became mental torture. That motivation and enthusiasm wasn’t there in the last year. How could it be? As you grow older in life, you pick up more and more responsibilities, so your family and your career have to become …

Davy stands up to cyber bullies

CYBER bullying is the “most cowardly assault” on young people, Davy Fitzgerald has claimed, while he called for the Irish Government to take the lead on stamping it out. Addressing 300 transition-year students at the Shannon Foynes Company Compass Transition Year Schools Competition final on Friday, the new Wexford manager said that one of the most effective ways of bringing cyber bullying to an end would be to shut down internet anonymity. Fitzgerald, who spoke openly about bullying after Clare’s 2013 All-Ireland win, said, “I have a particular concern about teenagers and cyber bullying, and bullying in general. I have no problem in saying it; it sickens me to the core. The cowardly way that cyber bullies hide on anonymous forums is appalling. These are faceless people saying the nastiest things about young people and not caring at all what the effects are.Why would you make fun of someone? Why would you laugh at someone? No one is perfect, we …

Clare interest in Fitzgibbon Cup

ALMOST 20 Clare hurlers will be involved in quarter-final action in the Fitzgibbon Cup next week, following results in Round 3 on Tuesday. Limerick’s three third-level institutions have all qualified for the knock-out stage of the competition. Title holders Mary Immaculate College drew with IT Carlow (0-18 each), with Eoin Quirke (Whitegate), Colm Galvin (Clonlara) and Michael O’Neill (Kilmaley) in their first 15. Hosts of this year’s finals weekend, NUI Galway also drew on Tuesday when they played Cork IT. The game ended at 0-19 each and Clare players in the Galway line-up were Conor Cleary (Miltown, St Joseph’s), who is the captain, and Oisín Donnellan (Feakle). Sixmilebridge’s Barry Fitzpatrick missed the game due to a hand injury. The Davy Fitzgerald-managed Limerick IT recorded another victory when they were 5-14 to 3-13 winners over Waterford IT. Eibhear Quilligan (Feakle), Cian Nolan (Smith O’Brien’s), Ciarán Cooney (O’Callaghan’s Mills), Oisín O’Brien (Clonlara), David Reidy (Éire Óg), Jamie Shanahan (Sixmilebridge) and Peter Duggan …

End game for Davy Fitzgerald

DAVY Fitzgerald has stepped down as Clare senior hurling manager after five years in the position during which time he led Clare to the All-Ireland senior title in 2013 and to the National league title earlier this year. The Sixmilebridge man’s decision to vacate the post, despite still having a year of his current term to run, has come following a meeting of around 30 players on Monday night at the Inn in Dromoland. While a vote wasn’t taken, there is general agreement that the players were evenly divided on the issue. A formal statement on Wednesday evening confirmed “Davy Fitzgerald has informed the Clare County Board that he will not be seeking reappointment to the position of Clare Senior Hurling Manager for 2017”. He insisted, “I was not asked to step down. The decision is entirely my own. In taking this decision however, I wish to reaffirm my absolute love and passion for Clare hurling. “I leave the Clare …

Fitzy set to continue as Clare boss

DAVY Fitzgerald is expected to continue as manager of the Clare senior hurling team for another year. After a four-month break, Clare GAA will hold a county board meeting next Tuesday at their meeting room in Caherlohan where, it is expected, a number of inter-county team managements for the coming season will be appointed. Whether or not Fitzgerald would seek another term in charge of the senior hurlers has been a topic of discussion since the team bowed out of the championship in July. Fitzgerald, who spent some time in hospital in the lead-up to Clare’s game with Galway, has said on a number of occasions since then that he will take time to decide on his future. He did attend a number of the club championship games last weekend, as did selectors Louis Mulqueen and Michael Browne. The expectation is that he will seek to continue as team manager. After leading Clare to the All-Ireland title in 2013 in …
