Kilmihil hosts Cusack Cup final

SIXTEEN days before Christmas Day and nine months after the Cusack Cup started on March 19, the league, which consists of seven rounds before the top three are finalised, will conclude in Kilmihil on Friday evening. When referee John Hannon throws the ball in for the 2016 final, two fierce rivals will shorten the winter’s evening as they go in search of the cup, €2,000 in prize money for the victors from The Clare Champion and a winning conclusion to their footballing year. Kilmurry are seeking an unprecedented six in-a-row, a feat never achieved by any club. Kilmurry have won 10 Cusack Cups up to now, while Doonbeg have 14 on the sideboard but none since 1994. Kilmurry have enjoyed a superb year, winning their 14th senior championship and 13th U-21 title, while their minors and juniors also reached their respective county finals. Cooraclare and Lissycasey seal quarter final places

Two senior quarter finalists, two intermediate semi-finalists, one junior A quarter finalist and a junior B finalist in the football championships have all been confirmed after this Saturday’s action. Cooraclare and Lissycasey advanced to the last eight in the race for the Jack Daly cup (senior championship) where they join Cratloe, Doonbeg, Kilmurry-Ibrickane and title holders Miltown St. Josephs who had secured their last eight places two weeks ago. the remaining two quarter finalists will be decided this Sunday Lissycasey overcame the disadvantage of being a player short for the second half which they dominated against O’Curry’s at Cooraclare. Ahead by 1-4 to 0-4 at half time, the goal coming from Cathal Doohan, they dominated the second half when they outscored their opponents, 0-10 to 0-1 to reverse the result from the same stage last year when O’Currys were one point winners. Kilmurry-Ibrickane make Cusack cup history

In scoring a two point win over Clondegad in the final of the Clare Champion sponsored Cusack cup at Kilmihil on Sunday, Kilmurry-Ibrickane made Clare football history as they became the first club to win the title for the fifth time in succession. For long periods it looked as if they would have to come back another day to decide the outcome before the Kilmurry men managed to edge ahead in extra time to win by two points, 1-16 to 1-14.  They were locked together at 1-12 each at the end of normal time. Clondegad went into the game chasing a first success in this competition, the Clare senior football league, and they certainly made their more experienced opponents fight all the way. It was Kilmurry’s second title in a week as they were crowned senior B champions a week earlier. Kilmurry-Ibrickane into another Cusack cup final

The final round of games in this season’s Clare Champion sponsored Cusack cup, senior football league, has cleared the way for the knock out stage as well as confirming who is to be relegated Holders Kilmurry-Ibrickane are back in the final following a two goal victory over Clondegad, 3-11 to 1-11. Both teams were short some players with Clondegad certainly feeling the loss of the Brennan brothers, Gary and Shane, due to injury. All is not lost for the Ballynacally based club as they will have home advantage in the semi-final when they will come up against their fellow parishioners, Lissycasey who secured their passage to the last four with a 3-10 to 1-8 win over O‘Curry’s at Doonaha. Bank holiday Cusack cup ties

ROUND two of The Clare Champion-sponsored Cusack Cup will take place on Monday at four venues, with all games throwing in at 2pm. In Doonaha, O’Curry’s will host Kilmurry-Ibrickane, who are on the trail of their fifth successive title. O’Curry’s were beaten by Clondegad in their opening game, while Kilmurry defeated Lissycasey by a point. Home advantage will help O’Curry’s but Kilmurry will still be favourites to pick up their second win of the campaign. In Lissycasey, the home club host neighbours Clondegad. Lissycasey are under a bit more pressure to get a result, given that they lost their opening game, albeit very narrowly. Clondegad are already on two points and another win would put them in a good position to push for a place in the semi-final at least. While this is a tricky one to call, Clondegad will start as marginal favourites in this all-parish derby. Elsewhere, Doonbeg host Miltown, who drew their opening game with Cooraclare. Doonbeg …

Kilmurry in pursuit of another Cusack Cup

HENNESSY Memorial Park in Miltown will host The Clare Champion-sponsored Cusack Cup final on Saturday, when holders Kilmurry Ibrickane take on Éire Óg in a repeat of the 2013 final, which the West Clare club won in a replay. This weekend, Kilmurry will be seeking their fourth successive Cusack Cup and their ninth in total, including three won by Quilty in the mid-1930s. The winners will be presented with a €2,000 cheque, while the runners-up will be presented with €1,000 from The Clare Champion. Éire Óg reached this year’s final courtesy of finishing top of the Cusack Cup table, while Kilmurry defeated Miltown 1-11 to 1-7 in the semi-final played in Quilty two weeks ago. Given that both clubs had disappointing ends to this year’s championship, they will be keen to finish the year with a trophy in the cabinet. Of course, Éire Óg beat Kilmurry in this year’s semi-final in Kilmihil before losing the county final to Cratloe. The …
