The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures on overseas travel shows an increase of 12.2% in visits to Ireland for the first seven months of 2015 compared to the same period of 2014. Tourism Minister Paschal Donohoe said, ‘I am pleased to welcome the statistics from the CSO which confirms the on-going strong performance in overseas visitors coming to Ireland. It is very encouraging that the growth in our overseas visitors is not confined to any particular region and all of our target overseas markets are performing exceptionally well.’ The latest CSO figures on Overseas Travel show: At 4,814,600 visits, overall trips to Ireland were up 12.2% in the first seven months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014. Householders have been urged to review their home security arrangements in light of the latest CSO Crime Report. According to the CSO, “There were 28,583 recorded burglary and related offences in the 12-month period ending in Q1 2015, representing an increase of 2,113 (+8.0%) when compared with the corresponding period ending in 2014. Comparing the same periods, aggravated burglary offences rose slightly by 0.9% to 324 offences, while recorded burglary (not aggravated) offences increased by 8.1%, from 25,499 to 27,600. Possession of an article (with intent to burgle, steal, demand) offences increased by 1.4% to 659.” CSO 2015. Of these burglaries, 456 took place in Clare Garda Division from Q1 2014 – Q1 2015. Central Statistics Office (CSO) latest tourism data shows that the number of overseas visits to Ireland between February and April 2015 increased by 13.5% compared to the corresponding period last year. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe and Minister of State, Michael Ring, have said the continued strong growth in tourism is contributing to our economic recovery and the creation of jobs across the sector. Minister Donohoe said, “As we enter the peak months for tourism, it is very encouraging that the growth trend witnessed in recent years is continuing in 2015 with a very strong performance for the first four months of the year. The December 2014 Live Register figures published today (Wednesday) show a decline of 3,300 compared to the November figures. This represents 37 consecutive months of decrease in the live register and means that the unemployment rate now stands at 10.6 per cent, down from a peak of 15.1% in February 2012. More than 140,000 people left the live register to go into employment over the last 12months. The figures also show that the live register has decreased in all eight regions of the country over the past 12 months. Both the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton and the director of the Small Firms Association, Patricia Callan have welcomed the improved position, confirmed in the CSO figures. By Owen Ryan THERE were fewer people on the live register in Clare last month than was the case in any month of March since 2008. Figures from the Central Statistics Office showed that last month there were 9,023 people signing on in the Banner county, down from 9,242 in February. That drop of 239 equates to a drop of 2.5% in a single month, and, when compared to the figure of 9,869 in March of last year, the decline in the number signing on is slightly over 8.5% in one year. Comparing the figures for the month of March over the last number of years is quite telling. In March 2007, with the country still in rude economic health, there were just 4,102 people on the live register. Twelve months later, the number was almost 25% higher at 5,126. Over the next year, the economy would decline dramatically and, in March of 2009, the number on the live register …

ECONOMIC data has been less grim than usual lately, and when the CSO revealed on Tuesday that 58,000 more people were at work in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the third quarter of last year, there was more cause for optimism. The CSO figures also showed a decline of over 41,000 in the number unemployed, a decrease of 12.8% in the overall figure. In Clare the third quarter of the year matched the national picture, with 9,849 people signing on in July but the figure was 8,943 in September, a decrease of 906. HOTELIERS have rejected as “outrageous” claims by Hotels.com that the average hotel price in Ireland has increased. Figures from the Central Statistics Office, which are based on a nationally representative sample of prices, show that inflation in accommodation services was at 0% for the twelve months to June 2013 and was in fact down at -1.1% for the twelve months to July 2013, the Irish Hotels Federation asserts. “The figures used for the Hotels.com survey are based on a very limited share of Irish hotels online sales and the sample size is only reflective of accommodation available on the Hotels.com website. It is too small to be representative of the 60,000 hotel and guesthouse rooms available for sale every day in Ireland,” said Lahinch-based, Michael Vaughan, Irish Hotels Federation . “It is irresponsible and misleading for Hotels.com to give the impression that hotel prices have risen when this is clearly not the case as borne out by the most recent CSO …
