Clare fail to match Cork’s sharpness

By Seamus Hayes Cork 2-21 Clare 0-18 A much sharper and hungrier Cork side proved too strong for Clare in the semi-final of the Waterford Crystal senior hurling tournament played before an attendance of 1,369 at Mallow on Saturday. The visitors were outplayed throughout the field in the opening half and found themselves twelve points, 0-7 to 2-13, adrift at half time. The Bannermen did show improved form in the second half but, overall, they can have no complaints with the result as they were well beaten in most areas throughout the seventy minutes. With the start of the Allianz league just two weeks away, Davy Fitzgerald and his management team are sure to be disappointed with this performance. True, it is still very early in the season and there are a lot of players to be considered for places in the side, but there must be some concern after this display. There was little to suggest, in the opening …

Clare dethrone the champions

By Seamus Hayes Clare 0-16 Tipperary 0-15 Clare’s top scorer in recent seasons, Colin Ryan, hit the winning point at Sixmilebridge to send Clare into the semi-final of the 2015 Waterford Crystal senior hurling tournament. The finalists for the past three years produced another close contest when they clashed at O’Garney Park before an attendance of 1,342 on a bright but cold afternoon. In winning, Clare dethroned the holders and set up a semi-final meeting with Cork in Cork next Sunday. It was a win Clare deserved but they nearly let it slip. Four points clear with five minutes remaining, the home side was under a lot of pressure in the closing minutes. Four unanswered points helped the visitors to draw level with a minute remaining before Ryan struck for the winning score. Playing with the aid of the breeze, Tipperary had the better of the early exchanges and raced into a two point lead after five minutes. As the …

All so easy for Clare

By Seamus Hayes Clare 2-28   UCC 1-4 WATERFORD Crystal senior hurling tournament title holders, Clare had an easy passage to the 2014 final when they played UCC at O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge on Sunday. With the 2013 All-Ireland senior hurling championship top scorer, Colin Ryan, contributing 1-12 the Banner side easily booked a place in the final where they will play either Tipperary or University of Limerick. This semi-final, scheduled for Nenagh, was postponed due to the inclement weather conditions. The Newmarket-on-Fergus man was in sparkling form, as Clare recorded a facile victory over UCC in a game played in difficult weather conditions. Showing ten changes from the side which comfortably overcame Limerick in the previous week’s quarter final, the holders included nine of their All-Ireland winning line up in their starting team for Sunday’s game. Despite playing against the wind in the first half, Clare were well on the way to the final by the end of the …

Bobby Duggan makes impressive debut

By Seamus Hayes Clare 1-14 Limerick 0-11 MEMBERS of Clare’s All-Ireland winning senior hurling team from last September were given a stern warning at Sixmilebridge on Sunday that they face stiff competition for their places in the squad in 2014. For their first competitive game since the All-Ireland win, Davy Fitzgerald and his management team selected a team that included just one of the All-Ireland winning line up, Patrick O’Connor for this Waterford Crystal cup quarter final Making his senior inter county competitive debut, 18 year old Bobby Duggan put down a strong claim for a place in the squad with a powerful display which yielded 0-12, three of which came from play. Cathal O’Connell, a member of last year’s squad and Seadna Morey, also a member of last year’s team, laid solid claims for inclusion in the first fifteen in 2014 while Cillian Duggan, playing at full back, also staked a strong claim for a place in the 2014 …

New look Clare to face Limerick

By Seamus Hayes Just two of the team which started in last September’s All-Ireland senior hurling final replay have been named in the Clare team to face Limerick in the opening round of the Waterford Crystal senior hurling tournament at O’Garney park in Sixmilebridge this Sunday. The left flank of the defence, made up of Cian Dillon (Crusheen) and Pat O’Connor (Tubber) remains in place for the meeting of the Shannonside rivals as Clare set out in defence of this title. Alan O’Neill and Cathal O’Connell from the All-Ireland winning under 21 team are named. O’Connell will lead the attack while O’Neill, centre back in the under 21 team, is named at wing forward. After an impressive year at full forward with his club O’Callaghans Mills, Conor Cooney will wear the number 14 jersey. The captains of the last two Clare minor A winning championship teams, Conor Cleary who led Kilmaley to the title in 2013 and Clarecastle skipper in …
