Gardai in North Clare are investigating a series of burglaries in Bellharbour, Ballyvaughan, Tubber and Crusheen during the past week. Between 12.15amand 7am last Saturday a shed was broken into in Turlough, Bellharbour by breaking the lock. A garden strimmer was stolen but was subsequently recovered dumped in a nearby ditch. The car that was parked nearby had its rear window smashed and a chainsaw stolen from the boot. Last weekend also, a shed in Muckinish, Ballyvaughan was also entered by breaking the lock. Stolen were a Netlfix Alto power washer, an MS 180 chainsaw, a pole saw and a pick axe. Earlier in the week a shed was broken into in Turloghmore in Boston, Tubber. Stolen in this burglary were a variety of wrenches and a Stihl orange-colured chainsaw. A double axle trailer was stolen from Clare County Council’s storage yard at Crusheen over the weekend. SEVERE and sudden hailstorms are affecting the M18 more than most other roads, are all but impossible to forecast and have led to accidents on the route, according to the National Roads Authority (NRA). Clare TD Joe Carey raised concerns about the Crusheen-Gort section of the route in the Dáil and he subsequently received a letter from programme and regulatory manager of the NRA, Gary Carey. The NRA official stated, “There would appear to be a particular problem associated with hailstorms along the M18, which seem to be more frequent along this route than at other locations throughout the national road motorway network. “It was such a hailstorm on January 13, 2015, which resulted in skidding accidents and the closure of the road for a time by An Garda Síochána. “It is worth noting that some of the hailstorms recorded had such intensity that at one point they caused the road surface temperature to drop by approximately 5oC in a …

UPDATE:15:00 A multi-vehicle car accident on the south-bound lane of the M18 motorway, on the Ennis side of Crusheen early today (Tuesday) resulted in the road being closed for over an hour. The crash occurred at approximately 7.30am and resulted in major diversions while the scene was being cleared and gardaí investigated. No one was seriously injured in the crash. Drivers heading from Ennis to Galway were initially asked to divert at the Tulla road junction, while, those travelling from Galway to Ennis as asked to divert at Gort through Tubber. However the route has since reopened. This morning’s crash is understood to have involved cars stopping to help a motorist who had skidded before a further vehicle skidded in the slippery conditions. Gardaí have issued an appeal to all road users to exercise particular care as the cold weather is set to continue over the coming days. “We would remind all motorists to drive as the conditions determine. CLARE County Council is to temporarily close sections of the M18 Motorway northbound and southbound from October, 9 to 17 in order to conduct road improvements. The proposed closures will take place on the M18 southbound carriageway from junction 16 Gort to junction 15 Crusheen, and on the M18 northbound carriageway from junction 15 Crusheen to junction 16 Gort. The southbound carriageway will be closed from 5am on Thursday, October 9 to 11.59pm on Friday, October 10. Meanwhile, the northbound carriageway will be closed from 5am on Monday, October, 13 to 11.59pm on Friday, October 17. Motorists using either of these routes are asked to divert via the R458.

By Seamus Hayes Crusheen 0-10 Clonlara 0-8 Championship favourites Clonlara were dumped out of the Clare senior hurling title race at Cusack Park on Saturday evening when fourteen man Crusheen deservingly took the spoils. In a dour struggle, the winners showed the greater hunger for victory and were full value for their win. They were dealt a massive blow just before half time when they had Pat Vaughan dismissed on a straight red card but throughout the second half, they were the ones that looked to have an extra man. Clonlara got the opening two points of the game after which they exchanged points three times before Crusheen levelled at 0-5 each. They swapped points in injury time to leave the half time score at 0-6 each after Clonlara had shot seven wides, five more that the winners. Changes to the Clare senior hurling management team for 2015 are, according to manager, Davy, Fitzgerald “not major”. Crusheen’s Michael Browne, who led both Tulla (2007) and Crusheen (2010 and 2011) to Clare senior hurling titles, will be joining as a selector, he has confirmed. In addition, he said, “Mike Deegan will move into the role that Mike Browne previously held, so Mike Deegan will still be involved. While Joe O’Connor, who has been with me for five years in Waterford and Clare, will be stepping back, he will still be involved as well. We are not losing Joe or Mike.” The new fitness and conditioning coach is Kelvin Harold, who has spent some time with West Brom, before joining Limerick FC and also having some involvement with Munster Rugb.y Fitzgerald confirmed that Paul Kinnerk will be stepping back this year. Crusheen went into their game with Newmarket as underdogs but a storming finish saw them emerge with a merited three point win. After playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half, Crusheen trailed by a goal at the half way point and when they found themselves five down ten minutes into the second half. they still trailed by three with six minutes remaining but a storming finish yielded 1-3 without reply to seal their passage to the semi-finals. Newmarket had a chance to take the game to a replay with the final action but Colin Ryan’s penalty effort was saved by Cathal Dillon and the Blues were out of the 2014 title race. By Seamus Hayes Champions Sixmilebridge face an uphill battle if they are to succcessfully defend their the Clare senior hurling championship title after they suffered defeat at the hands of Crusheen in the opening round at Cusack Park on Saturday evening. Crusheen had the better of the opening half and deservingly led by five points at half time when the score was 0-14 to 0-9.  The introduction of Rory Shanahan to the Sixmilebridge attack for the second half turned things around and with eleven minutes remaining they had opened a three point lead, 0-18 to 0-15. They fluffed a couple of chances to extend their lead an d this was the signal for Crusheen for whom the experienced Gerry O’Grady excelled.
