Permanent marker stone to commemorate Shannon crash

A PERMANENT marker has been put in place in the townland of Killula, close to Shannon Airport, to commemorate a 1961 plane crash in which four people were killed. The crash happened early on the morning of January 27, 1961, when an air corps De Havilland DH.104 Dove crashed while on a training exercise. There were five people on board, four of whom were killed. A person involved in the preparations for Tuesday’s event said, “The air corps are laying a marker stone on a site where an Air Corps plane crashed in 1961, four people lost their lives in that crash, it was on the approach to Shannon, in a place called Killula, on the way in. “There was a temporary marker on the site but they’ve put on a permanent one, and they came down to do that on Tuesday.” He said that the crash saw the deaths of two air corps pilots and two air traffic control …

Gardaí renew appeal for information following fatal Clare crash

GARDAÍ have renewed their appeal for information after a road traffic collision claimed the life of a young man in Clare last week. Declan Ward, who was in his late twenties, died in the two-vehicle incident that happened at around 5.45am last Wednesday morning on the main R352, around halfway between Bodyke and Tulla, in the townland of Ballinahinch. Gardaí, National Ambulance Service paramedics and units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Scariff station responded to the incident. On arrival they found that the driver and sole occupant of one car had been fatally injured. The driver of the second vehicle was also injured and taken by to hospital by ambulance for treatment. He was also travelling alone and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Three hospitalised following collisions in Clare

EMERGENCY services have been dealing with multiple road traffic collisions in Clare this evening as a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for Ireland remains in place. Crashes have been reported on several routes in the county including on the M18 motorway. Collisions were first reported at around 5.45pm on the M18 between Crusheen and Gort. The crashes, all single-vehicle incidents, occurred following heavy downpours of hail in the area. Units of the fire service from Ennis and Gort responded to the incidents along with Gardaí and National Ambulance Service paramedics. One collision was reported in the northbound lanes of the M18 at Tubber, however, on arrival at the scene, emergency services discovered another incident had occurred in the same area in the southbound carriageway. N18 closed due to serious road traffic collision

THE N18 dual-carriageway is closed southbound before the turn-off for the Radisson Hotel following a serious road traffic collision, reports Pat Flynn. The crash occurred at around 12.30pm between junction 5 Cratloe and junction 4 Cratloemoyle. Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon and Limerick City attended the incident along with National Ambulance Service resources and Gardaí. The southbound lanes of the dual-carriageway have been closed and traffic is being diverted off the route at junction 5. Any motorists caught up in the traffic tailback are being turned back up onto the slip-road at junction 5 and away from the scene. No further details on the incident are available however it’s expected the road will remained closed for several hours.

Pedestrian killed in crash

GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision at Darragh on Thursday evening. Shortly after 7pm Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene of the collision involving a car and pedestrian. The collision occurred on the N68 at Darragh on the main Ennis to Kilrush road. A 41-year-old female pedestrian was seriously injured when she was struck by the car. The woman was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where she was later pronounced dead. Road Traffic Accident on Ennis to Kilrush Road

A MAN has died following a two car collision at Ballybeg on the outskirts of Ennis on Monday afternoon. A driver and passenger were also hospitalised following the incident. The collision occurred at Edenvale on the main Ennis to Kilrush Road. A section of the road was closed off following the collision and traffic diversions were in place. The road has since reopened.

Two dead following Parteen Crash

TWO people have died and two others have been taken to hospital following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 12noon on Thursday September 26 in Quinpool, Parteen. It’s understood at this time only one vehicle was involved. Two persons were pronounced dead at the scene, while two men in their early 20s were taken to University Hospital Limerick with serious injuries. Forensic Collision Investigators are at the scene and the road remains closed with local diversions are in place. An incident room at Mayorstone Park Garda Station has been set up. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward, particularly any motorists who were travelling in the area between 12am and 1am who may have Dashcam footage. Three cyclists hospitalised on Sunday morning

THREE cyclists taking part in a race this morning were hospitalised, after one of the competitors clipped a jeep, causing something of a domino effect among a number of other participants. While a number of cyclists were hurt in the incident, none sustained critical injuries. The incident happened in the Clonmoney area, close to the Co-Op store, with the cyclists going in the direction of Newmarket. The road had to be closed after the incident happened at around 11.30am and it reopened around 1pm. No arrests were made and the matter is being investigated by Shannon Gardai. Owen Ryan
