Sixth lass pupils at Parteen National School will host a special remembrance event tomorrow to mark the anniversary of Sergeant Edward Lynch and his brother Frank who both died in the Battle of La Bassée (France) during World War 1. Edward and Frank were both serving with the Royal Munster Fusiliers when they were killed in battle on December 21, 1914, just a few days before the famous Christmas Truce. Their older brother Michael also died during the war years (December 30th 1916) whilst posted at Bere Island, Cork with the Royal Irish Regiment. The sixth class pupils have been delving deep into Edward Lynch’s life and military career since their teacher, Cathal Crowe, purchased his death plaque on eBay several weeks ago. The death plaque, more commonly known as the “Widow’s Penny” was presented to families who lost loved ones during the First World War. IRISH Water is like a teenager going out to a disco, so conscious is it of its image, according to Councillor Cathal Crowe. At last week’s Shannon Municipal District meeting, the Meelick man spoke about how quick the controversial utility had been to get in touch with him after he posted a critical tweet. “They’re like a 15-year-old going to a disco; they are very image conscious,” he claimed. While he said that local staff are outstanding, he was very critical of failings of Irish Water on a recent occasion when there was disruption to services in a number of areas in South-East Clare. He said they had informed people that the problem was a leak in Kilkee, while separately they had said a crew was sent out on a Sunday, when that was not the case. “The communication is absolutely dire; it’s chronic,” the Fianna Fáil councillor claimed. Irish Water has dampened claims about water discolouration in the South East Clare area saying there are no issues with water quality. Councillor Cathal Crowe had requested Irish Water to test the quality of water coming into homes in South-East Clare from the Castletroy Reservoir in Limerick, following complaints about discolouration. Several thousand residents’ water is piped through Limerick City to homes in Meelick, Parteen, Ardnacrusha, Westbury, Shannon Banks, Carraig Midhe and parts of Cratloe. According to Councillor Crowe, residents have complained of discolouration in the water for the past few months. “I saw this discolouration in my own tap water on Tuesday, December 29. There was a yellow tinge to the water as it flowed and it took some time for the dirty sediments in the water to fully settle. I poured a glass of bottled spring water to compare and contrast the two – the difference was very obvious. “With a lot of the administrative staff in Irish Water on …

WITH Easter 2016 just over six months away, the Banner County has not allocated enough funds to commemorate the event properly nor involved those with the best knowledge of the period, it has been claimed. At This week’s meeting of Shannon Municipal District, Fianna Fáil’s Cathal Crowe criticised Clare County Council for the level of preparations to commemorate one of the seminal events in Irish history. He said he will be calling on the council to increase the amount of funding allocated five-fold and to involve some prominent local historians in the preparations. Regarding the sum he wants to see spent on commemorating the centenary, he told The Clare Champion, “I’d hope around €150,000. I just think €30,000 (the current figure) is insulting to those who fought for independence”. OPPONENTS of the adoption of a controversial €120 million distributor road into the Clare County Development Plan are becoming increasingly concerned that it could get the green light this Friday afternoon. Judging by the vociferous objections from councillors at a recent council meeting, concerned residents in Parteen were confident that it would not get the required numbers for its adoption into the Clare County Development Plan. However, councillors who are against this proposal are now fearful that some of their colleagues may change their minds, following a briefing last Thursday conducted by consultants appointed by the council who endorsed the emerging preferred route without any change. Last week, Clare county councillors decided to defer making a decision on adopting the road into the County Development Plan, following trenchant opposition from a local lobby group. Councillors were given a deadline of July 31 at the council meeting to make a decision on the proposed Northern Distributor Road. No councillor spoke in …
