Cork’s experience too much for Clare

Cork 1-21 Clare 1-8 Greater experience allied to the loss of key Clare forward Niamh O’Dea with a shoulder injury were key factors as Cork scored a comfortable win over Clare in the Munster senior camogie championship semi-final at sun splashed Cusack Park this Saturday evening. From the outset the visitor’s experience was evident but Clare took the game to the favourites in the early stages and trailed by just a point after ten minutes when the score was 0-4 to 0-3. The winners had added 1-1 by the end of the first quarter and this was still the position five minutes later when Niamh O’Dea suffered a shoulder injury which ended her involvement in the game. The loss of the dual star was a massive blow to Clare but they were still in a good position at half time when they trailed by four points,1-4 to1-8, the home side’s goal having come from Doireann Murphy after she had taken …

Cusack Park hosts Clare camogie championship game

CONTROVERSY flared last February when a request from the National Camogie Association that Clare’s league match against Meath be played as part of a double header in Cusack Park, was turned down. Instead, Clare played Meath in Ogonnelloe at the same time as the hurlers played Cork in Cusack Park. The expectation had been that Clare GAA would facilitate the double header as counties like Galway, Kilkenny and Dublin had done. However, the wheel has turned and Saturday’s Clare v Cork Munster semi-final tie has been confirmed for the county grounds. Currently teaching geography and history at St Caimin’s in Shannon, Chloe Morey is delighted that Clare GAA has granted the camogie team access to Cusack Park. She feels it’s the only place to play championship for the county. “We looked for it about five weeks ago and, to be honest, we were saying to ourselves that we weren’t going to get it. I’m the first to give out and …

Malone and Brennan drive Clare to win over Cork

Clare 0-14 Cork 0-12 FOR the second successive season, Clare have beaten Cork in NFL division 2. Saturday nights win, in Artic conditions in Pairc Uí Rínn, was Clare’s first away league win in the southern capital for 22 years. It leaves Clare on six points in the division with one game left, at home to bottom of the table Louth, on Sunday. On an evening when every Clare player contributed, Jamie Malone and Gary Brennan were particularly superb, while Cathal O’Connor was immense around the middle and defended magnificently. Malone was deployed as a sweeper in the absence of the suspended Ciaran Russell and the Corofin man put over 0-3 from play. Aside from one misjudged free, which led directly to a Cork point, he filled that role exceptionally well. Cork could not cope with the Clare midfield with Brennan producing his best 70 minutes of the current league, while Cooraclare’s Seán O’Donoghue, who played at wing back, excelled …

Clare footballers need a new strategy to beat Cork

CLARE’S Division 2 future is entirely in their own hands. If they can somehow pull out a Newry-like performance in Pairc Uí Rínn on Saturday from 7pm, they have every chance of getting a result, beating Louth at home in their final league game on March 25 and assuring themselves of a place in the same division next year. While Jamie Malone will be available again, following his two-game suspension, Clare will have to plan without Ciaran Russell, who was red-carded against Roscommon. Gordon Kelly is still suspended, leaving Clare scarce, particularly defensively. If Clare lose, which is likely given that Cork will be buoyant following Sunday’s win over Meath, their Division 2 status will rest on beating Louth and hoping that they don’t end up in a three-way tie. Clare have a score difference of -19, which is significantly worse than Meath and Down. If Clare finish level on points with Down, they will stay up, given that they …

Clare top hurling league table after latest victory

Clare 0-23 Cork 0-19 Clare sit comfortably at the top of the Allianz hurling league division 1 table this evening following their third successive victory in this season’s campaign. Before a somewhat disappointing attendance of 4,905 at Cusack park this afternoon they led from the outset against Cork who were forced to make two late changes with corner forwards Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane being replaced by Daniel Kearney and Shane Kingston. The win has all but assured Clare of a place in the knock out stage of the competition while guaranteeing them their division 1 A status for next season It was one way traffic in the opening half at the end of which Clare held an eleven point advantage with the score at 0-16 to 0-5. While Cork had failed to capitalise on an excellent goal chance ten minutes from the break, Clare goalkeeper Donal Tuohy advancing from his line quickly to deflect Harnady’s effort behind, the home …

Two changes to hurling team for Cork visit

There are two changes to the starting line up for Clare hurlers for their Allianz round 3 division 1 hurling league against Cork at Cusack Park on Sunday from the team which started against Kilkenny two weeks ago. Andrew Fahy will wear the substitute goalkeeper’s jersey for this one Malone picked up an injury when helping U. L to victory in the Fitzgibbon cup semi-final on Tuesday night but it is understood that it’s not as serious as was first feared and he is listed amongst the substitutes for Sunday’s game which throws in at 2p.m. The team is Donal Tuohy (Crusheen); Jack Browne (Ballyea), Conor Cleary (Miltown, St Josephs),Patrick O’Connor (Tubber); Mikey O’Malley (Kilmaley), David McInerney (Tulla), Seadna Morey (Sixmilebridge); Colm Galvin (Clonlara), …

It should be a corker in Cusack Park

Mentors and players from Clare and Cork are arguing that the upcoming championship clash will not influence how the teams approach Sunday’s league game but it certainly adds some spice to the mix. Clare go into round three of the Division 1 A League on maximum points, thanks to impressive victories over Tipperary and Kilkenny, whereas Cork, after a good opening round win over Kilkenny, suffered defeat last time out in Wexford. Another defeat this week would put the Leesiders hovering close to the relegation zone so they are expected to come to Ennis in determined form. Clare, for their part, will want to keep their winning run going and they know victory this week will ensure their top division status for another year. They have beaten Cork in the Munster league already this year but they lost in last season’s league and also in the Munster final back in the summer of 2017. The team for Sunday will not …

CIF welcomes €115b boost for infrastructure

The Construction Industry Federation has welcomed the €115 billion investment in infrastructure announced by Government today (Friday) as a “potential gamechanger” for the southern region. The announcement was made as part of the government’s 10-year public capital programme and National Planning Framework. Regional CIF director, Conor O’Connell stated, “Today’s announcement could represent a game-changer for the southern region and for the Irish economy. Cities like Cork, Limerick and Waterford and our regional towns can be developed into a dynamic regional economy in the south that can counter-balance the irish economy’s overdependence on the greater Dublin area. The construction industry in the region has significant capacity to deliver the essential housing, infrastructure and specialist buildings underpinning the ambition outlined in the National Planning Framework.” Mr O’Connell said the €115 billion outlined will give construction companies in the region the confidence to invest in their businesses again and we expect to see significant increases in activity across all our sectors including civil engineering, …
