Iceland store closes in Shannon

IN recent years one of the most prominent outlets in Shannon Town Centre was the Iceland store, but it closed its doors yesterday, despite workers not having received notice. The shutters were down at the shop this morning and a typed notice displayed on them read, “Unfortunately Iceland Shannon has been closed and staff temporarily laid off as of today 07-09-23. “Sorry for any inconvenience caused. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support throughout the years.” Other Iceland stores across the country also closed yesterday and the Independent Workers Union issued a scathing statement, claiming that the company had not given its employees any warning. “Today, all remaining Iceland Stores across the Republic of Ireland, have been closed. The workers were given no notice of closure, and were told via phone call to “vacate the premises and collect all personal belongings”. They have now been placed on “temporary” lay-off, alongside their colleagues who have also been on …

Crusade to avert 2020 closure

Clare Crusader’s Clinic is facing the threat of closure by 2020, unless major Government funding is provided on a annual basis. While neither of the co-founders, Councillor Ann Norton and Frank Cassidy, want to close the clinic, they have warned its current losses are unsustainable without Government funding. In the wake of the Console scandal, the co-founders have decided to open the accounts for the first time to dispel the perception that it has loads of spare cash. According to profit and loss accounts provided to The Clare Champion, the clinic has accumulated losses of €107,341. The charity made a slight profit of €1,495 in 2012, a profit of €14,615 in 2013 before sustaining a major loss of €48,523 in 2014. The clinic suffered further losses of €17,587 last year and €41,231 for the first six months of this year. Fundraising from 2005 to 2016 generated a gross return of €2,684,779, less €395,931 in costs, giving a net figure of …

Roche confirms closure after new deal fails

Hundreds of workers in a Clarecastle pharmaceutical manufacturing facility have been left reeling after talks to copperfasten an expected takeover by another global giant ended unsuccessfully. Roche Ireland has confirmed that negotiations for the transfer of the Clarecastle manufacturing site to a global pharma services company have ended without an agreement following a rigorous examination. As announced in November 2015, production at Clarecastle will cease in a phased approach currently estimated to be completed between 2018 and 2019 when the company will exit the site. Roche will now enter into formal consultation with employees and their representatives about the planned closure of the site. Barring a new deal with another global giant, the closure will cost the local economy an estimated €20 million in direct and indirect jobs. Workers were informed about the unsuccessful end to negotiations at a meeting in the Clarecastle facility on Tuesday afternoon. In a statement issued to the Clare Champion, the company said it is …

Council to close Westbury area office

Clare County Council will close the Westbury Area Office in southeast Clare when the present lease expires next month. The closure will not result in any job losses as staff working in Westbury will be redeployed to other positions in the council. The decision not to renew the lease follows an examination of the level of activities at the Area Office which has identified that in 2015 the majority of the contacts, either through personal callers or telephone calls, were in relation to motor tax transactions and primarily to renew motor tax online. Excluding motor tax, a total of 400 contacts were made with the office throughout 2015. This equates to less than 10 contacts per week. The council said it is “conscious that with advances in phone technology in particular, access to online facilities is now much greater than when online access facilities were initiated at the office. An increasing number of people are renewing motor tax on-line in …

Roche seek “reputable buyer”

Roche Ireland is now seeking a “reputable buyer” to purchase its Clarecastle manufacturing facility, according to its managing director, Gerry Cahill. While there has been no definite closure date announced, it is expected the plant will  shutdown completely at the end of 2018 or early in 2019, in the event that no buyer is found. “Roche are looking for a reputable buyer, someone who has experience or who already owns other sites. Roche would expect that you would have an experienced team or owner for a site like this. We would also expect they would bring in some of their own products,” said Mr Cahill. Mr Cahill has confirmed there will be no immediate job losses in Roche’s manufacturing facility in the short term, despite Thursday’s confirmation of its shock closure over a three-year period. The Ennis native and resident stated it is business as usual in Roche and noted there will be no redundancies before June 2016. After that period, …

Closure of rehab unit raised in Dáil

THE “unacceptable” temporary closure of a rehabilitation unit at St Joseph’s Geriatric Hospital in Ennis was highlighted in the Dáil on Wednesday by Deputy Michael McNamara. The shutdown of this specialised unit on Friday last was raised by Deputy McNamara, after his initial attempt to secure a discussion under ‘Topical Debates’ last week was not allowed. The facility has a total potential capacity of 142 beds, including 22 that are consultant-led and are utilised for the purpose of rehabilitation for appropriately identified patients’ post acute care – medical or surgical. In a statement issued to The Clare Champion, the HSE stressed, “This is not a closure of the rehabilitation unit but only a temporary measure, for the shortest period of time possible and will not affect the patients receiving their rehabilitation care”. The authority pointed out the 14 patients that were transferred into another ward are still receiving rehabilitation. When Deputy McNamara learned about the closure, he was told there …

Airports Friday closure averted by High Court order

By Owen Ryan SHANNON Airport will remain open on Friday morning, after the High Court granted an injunction preventing SIPTU from going ahead with a planned four-hour work stoppage. The work stoppage had been due to take place between 5am and 9am and SIPTU had organised it due to an ongoing dispute over a €780 million hole in the Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme. It had been set to cause chaos, not just at the Clare airport, but also at Dublin and Cork. Both the Dublin Airport Authority and Ryanair challenged SIPTU in the High Court and on Wednesday evening, the Court found in their favour. While Shannon was not a party to the case, there was an agreement that the Court’s decision would also stand for the Clare airport.   Aer Lingus was not involved in the High Court case either, but it is understood that its workers who were also due to carry out a similar work stoppage will …
