Cliona puts best fist forward for gold medal

GORT teenager Cliona D’Arcy won the gold medal in the heavyweight division of boxing’s World Youth Championships last Saturday. It sees the Leaving Cert student at Gort Community School add to the European gold medal that she won in April. D’arcy defeated India’s Kirti Kirti in the final, with all five judges giving her the verdict. “It’s absolutely amazing, I actually can’t put it into words. The support from everyone really helps, and the coaches’ advice has really brought me a long way, I’m absolutely delighted!” she said in the aftermath of the final. “We watched a few fights and saw that she kept coming forward, so trying to stay off her and keep angles was my main strategy for the fight. “I was very, very nervous going in. Gort fighter set for world youth final, as Clare’s Jim wins bronze

BOXERS from Ennis and Gort have won medals at the World Youth Boxing Championships in Spain this week. Gort boxer Cliona D’Arcy defeated her Polish opponent in the semi finals of the 81kg+ category on Wednesday evening, advancing to the gold medal bout on Saturday Earlier this year she was the winner of a gold medal at the European Youth Championships. On Wednesday afternoon Ennis boxer Jim Donovan came up just short in his semi final, losing out on a 3-2 split decision to his Kazakh opponent. Donovan was clearly devastated as the result was announced, as he fell to his knees in the ring and punched the canvas. Speaking to the Clare Champion afterwards Martin Donovan, Jim’s uncle and trainer, said that while he had come up short, the Ennis fighter has achieved a lot in recent days. “I’m a bit disappointed today but it’s great that he’s coming home with a world medal.” He felt that Jim had …

European gold for Gort boxer

GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy won the European Youth Championship 81kg+ title in Bulgaria this evening, defeating Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. It was a fine display from D’Arcy, who four of the five judges having her as the winner, with only one giving the nod to the Ukrainian. Indeed, three of the five had the Gort woman winning every round. While Cherenko had a clear advantage in strength and size, D’Arcy had far better movement and frequently caught her opponent with clean shots. The Ukrainian came forward almost continuously, but she was made look rather predictable by the cuteness of the Gort teenager, who ended up winning in some style in front of raucous Irish fans.

Gort boxer in European final

GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy is on the brink of a European gold medal. Cliona has qualified for the final of the 81+kg European Youth Championship final, with a victory over Polish fighter Weronika Maja Bochen. In the final she will face the Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. The championships are being held in Sofia and Cliona’s final will be the last fight of today’s evening session, which begins at 3pm, Irish time. A stream of the fight will be available on the Irish Amateur Boxing Association’s website, www.iaba.ie. Ireland has had a great championships, with the team guaranteed at least eight medals.
