Visitor numbers at the Clare County Council owned Cliffs of Moher visitor attraction have increased by 12.5% during 2014 breaking the one million mark for the first time. Figures released reveal that visitor numbers have hit 1,075,000 for this year, representing an increase of over 115,000 visitors on the overall figure for 2013. 2014 marks the fourth successive year of increased visitor numbers to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience. Canadian TV personality and travel writer, Frank Greco travelled to Ireland before Christmas to film for his popular show The Travel Guy. The special Ireland episode, which will be seen in millions of households in Canada and elsewhere around the world, will include footage from the Cliffs of Moher, Loop Head Lighthouse, the Music Makers of West Clare in Miltown Malbay, and a traditional Irish music session at McGann’s Pub in Doolin. During their time here, the crew stayed at Crotty’s Pub and B&B in Kilrush and Hotel Doolin. They were in Ireland as guests of Tourism Ireland in Toronto. Dromoland Castle and the Cliffs of Moher are among 12 Irish businesses touring New Zealand and Australia this week. During the eight-day sales blitz, they will meet hundreds of influential travel agents, tour operators and journalists, during specially tailored business-to-business workshop sessions and networking events – telling them all about what the island of Ireland has to offer holidaymakers. Tourism Ireland’s final overseas trade mission of 2014 takes in the cities of Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. RTÉ’s Crimecall programme this week featured a renewed appeal by gardaí in Clare in a bid to discover the identity of a man, whose body was found at the base of the Cliffs of Moher four years ago. Inspector John Ryan from Kilrush said they had received some response to the appeal over the man’s identity, which gardaí in Ennistymon are now following up. Inspector Ryan has asked that anybody who might have any information about the deceased man’s identity or what had occurred towards the end of July 2010 to cause his death, however insignificant they might think it is, to contact Ennistymon Garda Station. The man’s remains were found by Doolin Search and Rescue on July 30, 2010. He was only wearing shoes and socks and was thought to have been in the water for about 10 days. A post-mortem examination showed injuries that were consistent with a fall. Searches and investigation of CCTV footage locally did not …

The Cliffs of Moher were the iconic canvas for a vast image of a moustache recently, as part of the launch of Movember. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland each year and one in eight Irish men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Now in its seventh year, Movember is a month-long campaign to raise money and awareness of men’s health. This year Movember created The Cliffs of Mo-her, officially the biggest Mo ever. Live for just one hour last week, the giant Mo measured 200 metres high by 600 meters wide as it was projected on one of Ireland’s most iconic natural landmarks. Following weeks of planning with the local community of surfers and photographers, the Movember Ireland team travelled to Clare to project the epic symbol on the cliff face to encourage Irish men to register and grow at www.movember.com. A group from the UK are the latest inbound tour operators to visit Clare and the West of Ireland in order to help grow Ireland’s share of the huge, worldwide tourism market. One of the highlights of the tour operator’s time here was a visit to the Cliffs of Moher. Jim Paul, Tourism Ireland’s head of Australia and developing markets, said, “The majority of our overseas visitors come from the core markets of Great Britain, North America and mainland Europe, and while this will continue, it is important that we expand our focus beyond these markets and look to the long-term opportunities presented by ‘new’ tourism markets, which we believe will play an increasing role in the future of the travel and tourism industry. It is therefore crucial that influential operators working in these markets get to experience Clare and Ireland, and the high standard of our tourism offering, at first-hand.”

The one millionth visitor to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience in 2014 was recorded on Monday, October 20. Rita Shaw from Niceville, Florida, USA, became the one millionth visitor when she arrived at the Cliffs at 11am. Rita, who is on holiday in Ireland with her husband Stephen, was greeted onsite with music and a champagne reception before being presented with a certificate marking the occasion, as well as a €5,000 prize return holiday to County Clare. 2014 marks the fourth successive year of increased visitor numbers to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience, with figures for the year so far up 12% on 2013.
