Oh là là! The Cliffs of Moher take to the Paris metro

Millions of French commuters are seeing ads for Ireland on large billboard posters as they pass through the busy metro stations of Paris. Tourism Ireland in Paris has teamed up with French airline Transavia to highlight the new daily flight from Paris-Orly Airport to Dublin, which is due to begin on 1 June. The campaign with Transavia includes some 550 ads in the Paris metro highlighting great value fares to Ireland, which are grabbing the attention of commuters with a beautiful image of the Cliffs of Moher – and reminding them why they should put Ireland on their holiday wish-list for 2015. It includes online advertising and a competition on Facebook. This is the first time that Transavia will fly to a northern European destination. Ireland is not currently served from Orly Airport – so the new flight represents an important opportunity for both leisure and business tourism from the all-important French market. France is one of our top four …

Lisdoon to get the Baden-Baden Treatment

LISDOONVARNA could be the Baden-Baden of Ireland, a local hotelier has claimed. The German town rose to international fame when it was used as a base by the English soccer team, as well as players’ wives and girlfriends, during the 2006 Fifa World Cup. The spa resort in the foothills of the Black Forest welcomes millions of day visitors and hundreds of thousands of over-night tourists each year. Marcus White of White’s Hotel Group, which owns the Hydro Hotel, the Imperial Hotel and the Burren Castle Hotel in Lisdoonvarna, believes the North Clare town could boom in a similar fashion, if the town’s spa wells are developed. Lisdoonvarna became a popular resort in the early 1800s because of the spa wells and its waters, containing minerals reputed to have health restorative effects. Mr White last week announced deals with German tour operators that would see 60,000 additional bed nights filled in North Clare. “I have talked to Government officials. I …

A sunny start of tourist season

A COMBINATION of good weather, the Wild Atlantic Way and a public holiday saw huge numbers of people flock to the Clare coast at the weekend. Tourism providers across the county are reporting one of the busiest Easter weekends in recent years. One prominent hotelier said it was “more like August than April”, which meant that seasonal staff could be hired over a month earlier than usual. Attractions across the county also recorded high visitor numbers, with the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, Bunratty Folk Park and Craggaunowen all recording increases this year compared to last. “It was a super weekend,” John Burke from the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point and Hotel Doolin stated. “We had a surge in customer numbers. People just want to flock to the coast to cool down and it was great to see it pick up so early in the season. It has allowed us to recruit earlier in the year. Normally, seasonal staff wouldn’t …

Italians check out the Banner

Tourism Ireland in Milan invited a leading Italian tour operator, Cocktail Viaggi and 12 of its top-producing travel agents, all specialists in coach tour and group travel, to visit Clare over the holiday weekend. One of the main themes of the travel agents’ itinerary, prepared by Fáilte Ireland, was the Wild Atlantic Way. It included visits to the Cliffs of Moher and the Aillwee Caves. They also sampled some of Clare’s fantastic cuisine, at the Long Dock Pub and Restaurant in Carrigaholt. Niamh Kinsella, Tourism Ireland’s manager in Italy, said: “Italy is an important market for tourism to the island of Ireland and 2015 has got off to a positive start, with the most recent CSO figures showing growth of +39% for the December 2014 to February 2015 period, an additional 15,000 Italian visitors compared with the same three-month period last year.

Smooth sailing on the Wild Atlantic Way

Fáilte Ireland met members of the Clare tourism industry in the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis, on Thursday, as part of a series of briefings, with a focus on the Wild Atlantic Way. This year, the national tourism authority will be upping the ante with a mixture of further developments for the attraction and greater promotion to key overseas markets. Last year, Fáilte Ireland invested €10 million rolling out the route, which stretches from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork and instantly the new attraction garnered significant interest overseas. Over its first year in existence, Fálte Ireland has been working to further develop the Wild Atlantic Way and has made significant progress to date. A signage plan has been implemented for the entire route and all the directional signage along the route has been in place since the end of May 2014. At the briefing Fiona Monaghan, Fáilte Ireland’s head of the Wild Atlantic Way, said 2015, …

Council accepts invite to visit China

Clare County Council has accepted an invitation from the People’s Republic of China to send a delegation to the country later this year. Since the visit of China’s Vice President Xi Jinping’s to Clare in 2012, the local authority has been exploring the potential of establishing a twinning arrangement that fosters the development of closer industrial, tourism, farming, educational and cultural ties between the county and China. Members of Clare County Council today (Monday) voted in favour of accepting an invitation from the Vice President of Yunnan Province to visit the region in April or May 2015 with a view to building links between the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark and the Stone Forest Geopark (Shilin Geopark), located in the southwest of China.
