Cliff walk in ‘very poor condition’

NORTH Clare Councillor Richard Nagle has asked that the council liaise with the Clare Local Development Committee (CLDC) to put in place a maintenance and upgrade programme for the cliff walk from Doolin to Hags Head, in consultation with local landowners. He raised the issue at the March meeting of West Clare Municipal District. “If we’re serious about promoting tourism and increasing the number of bed nights in North Clare, this is a primary resource. It is hugely popular and it doesn’t matter what day of the year you go there, there are people walking. There are hundreds of people walking it on a daily basis, during the summer months in particular,” Councillor Nagle said. He told the meeting that the surface is now in a very poor condition and that maintenance is needed immediately. “Since it was initially developed, very little money has been spent on that walk. The problem now is that the surface has deteriorated. I see …

Cliffs numbers climbing

Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience attracted a record 1,427,166 people during 2016, representing a 14% increase on the previous year. Fully Independent Travellers (FIT) visitors, including walkers, cyclists and those travelling by car or public transport, grew at a rate of 13.5% while group visitors grew by 15%. The greatest growth recorded at the world-famous visitor attraction came in the shoulder and low season with visitor numbers for December up 52% on the same month in 2015. The Clare County Council owned Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience has undergone substantial investment in product and facilities in recent years while the launch of the 12km Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk and the visitor attractions’ status as a Signature Point along the 2,500km Wild Atlantic Way has contributed to its growing popularity.

Weight Watchers take cliff walk in their stride

[doptg id=”38″] It started with just the germ of an idea at a Weight Watchers meeting, where members gather each week to be weighed and to gain encouragement to keep losing weight. One of the members, Shelly Galvin, suggested that a social outing would be a good way to increase morale and fellowship. By the end of the class, the members decided that they would tackle the walk along the Cliffs of Moher, with sponsorship from The Clare Champion. As a result, over 50 Weight Watcher members from classes around the county descended on Liscannor last Saturday to tackle the 18km route. Although the weather forecasts were iffy, the day couldn’t have been better, with blue skies and a cooling breeze coming in from the sea. Spirits were high as the group set off, with a cracking initial pace, despite the sometimes uneven and narrow path. It was wonderful to see the Cliffs from a completely different angle and the views …

Kathleen leads the way on Weight Watchers Walk

Approximately 100 Weight Watchers members from around the county will walk the Clare coast in an event the organiser hopes will become an annual charity fundraiser. Weight Watchers leader Kathleen Shannon is behind the walk which will take participants from Liscannor to Doolin along the Cliff walk. “If it is a success I would like it to become an annual event for charity,” she said. “This is the dummy run to see how it will go. I want to make it a charity event for Clare next year and if that goes well I would like it to become an all-Ireland fundraiser for people to raise money for charities in their own area,” she added. This year’s event is not raising money for charity but is a non-for-profit event, according to Ms Shannon. “This year it is just for fun. People will pay for the bus and the meal after but that is it. The total distance of the walk …
