Clarecastle man pleads guilty to dealing Cocaine

A 62-year-old Clarecastle man has pleaded guilty to having €4,000 worth of cocaine in his possession for sale or supply at a sitting of Limerick District Court this week. Gerard Casey of 68 St Joseph’s Terrace, pleaded guilty to charges of having cocaine for sale or supply and possession of the illegal drug on April 20, 2017 at a sitting of Limerick City District Court on Monday, October 2. The Clarecastle man has admitted having the drugs at Bunlicky – a townland on the N18 earlier this year. The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the matter being dealt with summarily before the district court on a plea of guilty only, and jurisdiction was accepted. A probation report was ordered and the matter was adjourned to December 6 next for this to be prepared and it is likely that sentencing will take place on that date.

McDonagh planning new motorway service area

A NEW application for a major motorway service area that could employ 100 people is just around the corner, Pat McDonagh told The Clare Champion this week. The Supermac’s founder is also involved with the Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall and the Galway Plaza off the M6 between Galway and Dublin. While a previous application for a similar development adjacent to Junction 12 at Killoo, Clarecastle, off the M18 was withdrawn, Mr McDonagh said another one is coming and he is confident it will be positively received. “We’d be very positive. We’re going to be reapplying in the next few weeks. The architects, engineers and consultants are working on it now at the moment. “The application should be submitted in the next three to four weeks. Then it has to go through the due process and it takes eight to nine weeks approximately after that. Sometimes they look for further information. It’ll be about three months or so before the …

One campside plan for Fleadh 2017

THERE will only be one campsite for Fleadh revellers this year if the plans in the event licence application are approved, local businesses have been told. While there were a number of campsites last year, this year there is only one campsite, which is in Clarecastle, in the event licence application. Details of car-parking arrangements and event control were outlined at the meeting by Clare County Council Fleadh co-ordinator Noleen Fitzgerald. The early part of the festival comprises of Scoil Eigse, a summer school of Irish traditional music, song and dance for children. It is competition time from Thursday to Monday, when competitors will flock from the United States of America, Europe, the United Kingdom and provincial champions from all over Ireland. Patrons can also look forward to concerts, lectures, Seachtain na Gaeilge and Fleadh TV. O’Callaghans Mills end a 23 year wait

O’Callaghans Mills 2-16 Clarecastle 1-9 O’Callaghans Mills bridged a twenty three year gap to their last title win in the under 21 B hurling championship when they scored a comprehensive win over hot favourites Clarecastle at Dr. Daly Park in Tulla this Sunday evening. In a game in which they were never behind, the Mills led by double scores, 0-8 to 0-4, at the interval. The sides traded points four times before the end of the third quarter before the winners got as massive boost when Gary Cooney struck for the game’s first goal, a score that put eight points between the sides, 1-13 to 0-8. Three minutes later, with just ten minutes to play, Clarecastle’s hopes of rallying were dealt a further blow when they were reduced to fourteen men as Owen O’Hara was shown a straight red card. Four Clare villages to benefit from renewal scheme

Some €380,000 has been earmarked for local improvement schemes in Clarecastle, Kilkee, Scariff and Shannon from the €10 million national kitty. Each of the four Clare projects will receive €95,000 to finance a wide range improvements that have been put forward by local community groups to make their towns and villages more attractive places in which to live and work. In Clarecastle, the funding will be used to put electric and phone cables underground, replace lighting columns, provide lighting for public spaces, redesign traffic dominated spaces, upgrade footpaths and crossings, as well as planting and painting throughout the village. The €95,000 allocated to Kilkee will be used for landscaping and to provide public art at Percy French Green and the Carrigaholt roundabout. Scariff will benefit from work on safety and access to the access to public areas while the allocation to Shannon will go towards delivering the Shannon Town Green Infrastructure Plan. “We are determined to get this funding delivered …

Roche’s €27.5m on wages and pensions

WAGES, salaries, social insurance and pensions cost Roche €27.5 million last year, it emerged this week. According to company accounts filed for the financial year ended December 31, 2015, Roche Ireland Limited spent €20.7m on wages and salaries; €2.2m on social insurance; €3.5m on defined benefit pension service costs and €977,000 on other benefits. The total figure is up from €24.8m a year earlier. It has also emerged that a majority of employees have taken a generous redundancy package of six weeks wages from the company, plus two weeks statutory redundancy, depending on years of service as part of their exit compensation. All of this is capped at a maximum of 2.5 years wages. A small number of employees, believed to be in the region of 10%, have secured jobs in other pharmaceutical companies. Man rescued From River Fergus

A man in his 60’s has been rescued from the River Fergus. Gardaí were alerted around 9.30 last night after a man got into difficulty close to the bridge on the N85 ring-road near Clareabbey in Clarecastle.. Three units of the Ennis Fire Service, including a specialist Swift Water Rescue Team, were sent to the scene, while the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also alerted, but was later stood down. Members of An Garda Síochána located the man beneath the bridge and attempted to reach him by wading into the water before fire service personnel brought him to safety. The man was transferred into the care of the ambulance service.

No to Clarecastle motorway plaza

AN Bord Pleanála has rejected plans for a Barack Obama-style motorway plaza just outside Clarecastle. Earlier this year, Supermac’s Owner Pat McDonagh was granted planning permission by Clare County Council for a rest stop and drive thru on the Limerick – Gort motorway but the decision has been overturned on appeal.Supermac’s has a very successful plaza at Moneygall in County Offaly and another near the M6 at Loughrea. The planning permission in respect of the Clarecastle project was appealed by service stop rival, Applegreen, which has its own plans for a service area, 8km south of the Supermacs site. Later, however, Applegreen and Claureen Service Station withdrew their appeals and local man, Shane Brigdale was the only remaining opposition. The rejection of the plan represents a blow to the prospects of up to 100 jobs during the operation phase and up to 80 jobs during the construction phase.
