After much back-and-forth over the past week, the concluding stages of the Fitzgibbon Cup (Third Level A Hurling Championship) start this Friday at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT). The decision of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick to appeal, after IT Carlow had won its appeal and were re-instated last week, led to the postponement of two quarter-finals to Tuesday of this week. IT Carlow had beaten Mary Immaculate College to win a quarter-final place but they were subsequently removed from the competition when the ruling authority decided they had included an illegal player. The Leinster college successfully appealed that decision to get back into the competition but the remaining two quarter-finals remained in doubt right up to Tuesday morning, after Mary Immaculate decided to take their case to the DRA, whose decision to uphold Carlow’s position was confirmed a few hours before the quarter-final took place at the Limerick college venue. CRATLOE are “a shining example to all clubs because of how much they value the club scene” is the view of Kilmallock manager and former Clare hurler, Ger O’Loughlin. “I have the utmost respect for the lads from Clare. When I needed lads to answer the call during my time at Clare manager, they responded and they were still in their teens. They have come on so well. “It will be a huge task for us to overcome the game they play, as there are so many areas they could beat you in. A MAN is currently in custody at Ennis Garda Station following an alleged incident in Clarecastle this morning, during which it is claimed another man was threatened with a firearm. The man who was allegedly threatened is understood to have been working on the installation of a water meter. A Garda statement this afternoon said that a 59-year-old man had been arrested in relation to a firearms incident, which happened at around 9.20am. He is being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. The incident is said to have occurred at Quay Road and it is understood that a firearm, which is now being technically examined,  was recovered during a subsequent search of the area.   Owen Ryan

IT was the end of an era on Monday for some of Clare’s best known credit unions as St Francis Credit Union in Ennis, Ss Peter & Paul Credit Union, Clarecastle, and Fergus Credit Union, Lissycasey, amalgamated into one credit union with total savings of more than €150 million. And that may not be the end of amalgamation in Clare and the wider region as Caherdavin Credit Union takes in the Shannon Development Credit Union, and Southill and St John’s credit unions in Limerick. The moves follow the introduction of new regulations by the Central Bank, now responsible for the country’s 460 credit unions. “In the future smaller credit unions aren’t going to survive because there’s so much regulation coming in and the smaller credit unions won’t be able to afford the cost of regulation,” said outgoing St Peter & Paul’s Credit Union director, Dermot Moloney, who has served his local credit union for the past 38 years. A CLARECASTLE family has paid tribute to their local community, following their second successful educational mission to the heart of Africa. Pat and Frances Bergin and their adult children, Tim and student teacher, Laura, have expressed their appreciation to all those in the Clarecastle-Ballyea parish, who supported their month-long trip to Zambia in July. The Bergin family were accompanied by five student teachers from St Patrick’s College in Drumcondra for their lengthy stint at a school in the Linda compound, outside Lusaka, the capital of land-locked Zambia. The school was originally founded as a community school in 2003, with the help of Frances Bergin’s sister, Sr Claudia, a Mercy nun, who is now living in Trim, County Meath. Last year, Laura set up a society in St Patrick’s called ZOCS, Zambian Open Community Schools, and she and three other students, including Ennis trainee teacher, Ultan O’Brien, went to the Zambian school with Laura’s parents to begin the work. “It was …

GARDAI are urging people to minimise the degree of opportunity for criminals following a spate of break-ins around the county during the past week. Last Friday, between 10am and 2pm, two houses in Madden’s Terrace in Clarecastle were broken into. One house was ransacked in an effort to obtain property and some items of jewellery were stolen from the other house. Thieves made off with a Phillips flatscreen TV following a break-in to a house on Golf Links Road in Ennis while in Moveen Park, Kilkee a mobile home was broken into when the front door was forced open. A brown leather purse containing bank cards and a sum of money was stolen. Gardai are also investigating thefts in Broadford. Aluminium piping was stolen from a yards in Ballyquin while, on a different date, three car batteries were also stolen from a yard in Ballyquin. INTEREST in hotting up about the proposed development of competing crematoriums in Clarecastle and Shannon, which will be the subject of two separate yet inter-linked proposals at next Monday’s Clare County Council meeting. The two largest parties, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, and at least one independent, will have to unite to support a material contravention, which would facilitate the development of the Clarecastle crematorium. Anything less than 21 votes in favour of the proposed material contravention of the Ennis and Environs Development Plan would constitute a major setback to Fenloe Properties’ plans to construct a crematorium unit, memorial gardens, and cemetery at Kildysart Road, Ballaghfadda, Ennis. It is expected that Fianna Fáil will propose and support the Fenloe Properties development en bloc, which totals 12 votes.
