TRANSPORT Infrastructure Ireland (TII) should be “shot at dawn” for its work on the Clareabbey Roundabout a councillor has said as he renewed calls for traffic calming to be introduced. Councillor Paul Murphy has described efforts to address safety concerns on the roundabout on the outskirts of Ennis over the years as a “personal crusade” believing there will be a serious accident some day if improvements are not made. The Clarecastle councillor has raised numerous notices of motion relating to Clareabbey roundabout at meetings of the Ennis Municipal District over the years. Most recently he has urged that traffic lights and or signalling be introduced to make the roundabout safer for motorists and vulnerable road users. THE Mayor of Ennis has likened the development of the Clareabbey Roundabout to “putting a knife through a pound of butter” resulting in “dividing the two communities of Clarecastle and Ennis”. Councillor Paul Murphy has been a long-time campaigner for improved safety at the roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists. At the monthly meeting of the Ennis Municipal District he sought an update on the progress of three draft proposals submitted to Transport Infrastructure Ireland, as well as on a proposed sustainable biodiversity project. THE Clareabbey Roundabout is “a death trap” for cyclists and pedestrians and the notorious blackspot must be made safe as soon as possible before lives are lost, a Clare TD has said. Deputy Joe Carey spoke out after Clare County Council confirmed it is currently finalising a “feasibility and options report” for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in relation to the roundabout. The local Fine Gael TD has written to the local authority and TII for a progress update in which he outlined the serious danger the roundabout currently poses to cyclists and pedestrians. Clare County Council has confirmed that construction work on two transport infrastructure projects in Ennis will commence in the coming days. Work is set to get underway on Route 2 (Contract 1) of the Ennis Active Travel Town scheme, which will deliver improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists throughout Ennis. The project will provide on-road cycle lanes from just north of Clareabbey Roundabout as far as St Flannan’s College Roundabout, as well as advance stop boxes for cyclists at signals and circulating cycle lanes at roundabouts along the R458 (old Galway/Limerick Road through Ennis) and R352 (from Kellys Korner to Maid of Erin via Newbridge Road). Once completed, the new route will connect to Phase 1 of the West Clare Railway Greenway at Mill Road Ennis, Contract 1 of which was constructed in 2015 and links Woodquay to Active Ennis Sports and Amenity Park, Lees Road.
