FOURTEEN years after his daughter Emer’s life was taken, Johnny O’Loughlin believes the man wanted in connection with her death is at large in Morocco. However, he feels little is being done to investigate the possibility that John Griffin is living in the North African state. This week, Mr O’Loughlin, who is from Ennistymon but now lives in Inagh, spoke about how raw the emotion over the loss of his much-loved daughter still is. Emer was murdered in 2005 and her remains were found in the burned-out mobile home of John Griffin. Mr Griffin was admitted to a psychiatric facility in Ballinasloe following an incident a few days after Emer’s death. He would subsequently check himself out of the facility, apparently attempt to fake his own death on the Aran Islands and has been missing since. Mr O’Loughlin said he has received credible information from an Irishman, who came across Mr Griffin, while in Morocco. While he says the person …

Bakers in Clare rose to the occasion this April, as they raised a total of €2,642 at this year’s Great Irish bake for Temple Street. People from all over the county took to their kitchens for the cause. Temple Street was also delighted to welcome broadcaster and mum Karen Koster in the kitchen as Great Irish Bake Ambassador, who helped raise awareness and encourage people all over Ireland to put on their aprons and raise money for a great cause. Bake sales were held in homes, schools and businesses across the Ireland, with a total of €226,152 raised by Temple Street’s Great Irish Bakers nationwide. The money raised will help buy vital, lie-saving equipment for our wards, departments, theatres and ICU, which is going to directly benefit thousands of sick children.

SOURCES have told the Clare Champion that staff at the Moneypoint Power Plant have today been told that management wish to reduce its staffing level from 192 to 86. It had been widely expected that job losses would be announced at the plant today, while ESB representatives are set to meet Clare’s Oireachtas members later this week. The ESB issued a statement this evening, but declined to confirm how many staff they wish to make redundant. “Since its commissioning in 1985, Moneypoint Power Station has played a key role in supporting the national economy through the delivery of secure, reliable and affordable power.  However, in recent years Moneypoint has been operating in an increasingly competitive energy market, actively competing to sell power and competing in auctions to acquire capacity contracts for the plant.    “In addition, the growing volume of renewables in the market and the impact of carbon prices on the price of Moneypoint output, has meant that Moneypoint …

A SITE has been secured for the construction of a new €25 million St Joseph’s Hospital in Ennis. The construction of the 100-bed, community nursing unit on five acres of Diocesan lands located near the Turnpike in Ennis will ensure that elderly care services remain at the heart of the county town, according to Minister of State for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen. Deputy Breen said, “I am delighted that a site has been secured at this central location in Ennis for the construction of the new €25 million St Joseph’s Hospital. The sale of the 5.09 acres of land remains subject to planning permission for the development of the 100 bed Community Nursing Unit, but I believe the site provides the best option following the appraisal of a number of sites in the Ennis environs by the HSE. “The new state-of-the-art St Joseph’s Hospital building has been prioritised in the HSE Capital …

THE average price sought for a house in Clare is now approaching €200,000. That’s one of the findings of the latest Daft.ie house price report, which analyses trends in the Irish residential sales market in the second quarter of the year. It found that the average asking price for Clare is €196,817, up 11.5 % on the second quarter of 2018. The average was up 3.1% compared to the first quarter of 2019, and the increase from the trough of the recession is 64.6%. There were 136 transactions involving new homes, a reduction of 13% year on year. The asking price for an average one-bed apartment in Clare was €84,000 during the quarter, while for a two-bedroom terraced house it was €99,000. Three-bedroom semi-detached houses had an average asking price of €132,000, while the average for four-bed bungalows was €270,000. For five-bed detached houses it was €284,000. Clare 2-23   Cork 2-18 Eoghan Moloney CLARE ended their season on a high with a hard fought five-point win played during a biblical storm in Cusack Park this afternoon. Clare got the perfect start thanks to Shane O’Donnell who found the net after just 20 seconds as Cusack Park erupted with delight. Cork fought back thanks to points from Horgan and Cadogan but once The Banner found their groove, they were causing Cork all sorts of problems. Peter Duggan and Tony Kelly were massively influential, and scored 1-7 between them in the first half. The goal coming in the 34th minute when Kelly buried a blistering shot in the top right-hand corner to send Cusack Park wild once more. Three late points for Cork narrowed the gap slightly but Clare still lead 2-10 to 1-8 after an excellent first half.
