WOMEN affected by domestic abuse and domestic violence are finding it more difficult to make contact for support with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic removing “little windows of freedom”, according to Clare Haven. However the local service have assured that they are open and working to protect women and children despite the ongoing health crisis. This comes as Clare Gardai confirmed a number of domestic violence incidences were reported to them last week. Clare Haven Services, which has been supporting women and children affected by Domestic Abuse and Domestic Violence in Co Clare for 25 years, has welcomed as “timely” a new Government awareness and information campaign on domestic violence. Dr Siobhán O’Connor, Manager of Services, said that the campaign comes at a critical time for women and children who may be confined and isolated with their abuser in towns and townlands across the county. THE children of Clare are being urged to find inspiration in staying at home and get involved in a countywide art competition being run on social media. The brainchild of Ennis based visual artist Rachel McManus the competition is free to enter and is open to all primary school children. The Clare Kids Art Competition is already proving popular with the county’s youngsters, with Rachel already wowed by the standard of entries. The theme of the competition is ‘My Life at Home’ with primary school children asked to create a work of art based on this idea. Rachel explained the inspiration behind the competition, “We are all navigating these unusual times as best as we can. It can be hard for kids not being able to go playgrounds, play with their friends and not being able to play sport or go to their normal activities. A LOCAL organisation are endeavouring to bring some positivity into the lives of others in these uncertain times. The Clarecastle Heritage and Wildlife Group have issued a call for uplifting stories of how people are coping with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. They aim to share these stories on their recently launched website with the aim of highlighting the goodness in the world in these uncertain times. It is hoped that these positive messages will bring comfort to others. Eric Shaw of the Clarecastle group explains, “Clarecastle Heritage & Wildlife Group feel that in the midst of this unprecedented public health emergency, there are so many positive responses that deserve to be recorded and shared so as to give the community an uplift. AN Ennis art student has drawn on his talents to be named among the winners of a video animation competition. ELVES, the End-of-Life Vehicle compliance scheme and Limerick School of Art & Design LIT have announced the winners of their recent joint video animation competition. The purpose of the contest was to help ELVES www.elves.ie raise awareness about how End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) in Ireland should be processed properly. Mikey Cashell from Ennis was one of the winners in the competition. As the compliance scheme for the End-of-Life Vehicle sector, part of ELVES remit is to create public awareness about how people should correctly scrap their cars and small vans, once they are no longer roadworthy.  To help achieve this aim, ELVES partnered with Limerick School of Art and Design LIT to task some of its students with creating commercial standard video animations which would best convey this message. Seven more Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Clare, bringing the number of positive cases so far to 113. Thirty eight more people diagnosed with the virus have died bringing the total number of deaths in Ireland to 444. Of the latest deaths, 29 occurred in the east of the country, six in the west and three in the south. The median age of today’s reported deaths is 84 and 28 people were reported as having underlying health conditions. An additional 1,068 new cases were diagnosed as of 1pm today with 657 new confirmed cases reported by Irish laboratories and 411 by a laboratory in Germany. With the latest figures from Germany included, there are now a total of 12,547 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread. Of the latest deaths, 36 were located in the east, four in the west and one in the south of the country The people included 16 females and 25 males and 31 were reported as having underlying health conditions. The median age of today’s reported deaths is 85. The number of Covid-19 positive cases in Clare increased yet again and an additional eight cases now brings the total confirmed cases in the county to 106. The number of positive Covid-19 cases in Clare has risen by a further ten and now stands at 98 cases in total. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been informed that 31 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Ireland have died. Of these, 26 deaths were located in the east, three in the north west, one in the south and one in the west. The deaths included 18 females and 13 males and 25 people were reported as having underlying health conditions. Tthe median age of today’s reported deaths is 82. There have now been 365 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland and a summary of all 365 deaths provided by the HPSC shows that  215 (59%) of those who died were male, 150 (41%) were female, the median age of those who died is 82 and 247 of these cases were admitted to hospital with 37 admitted to ICU. IT’S all to play for at Clarecastle National School which is set for a boost to its sporting facilities. The school have been granted planning permission for a development which will see the construction of a new hurling wall. The school has also been given the go-ahead for a 2.4 metre high wire mesh fence for its existing soft play area and planned future Astro Turf pitch. The hurling wall will have an overall height of 4 metres and will be 10 metres long, located along the north western boundary of the site which is shared with the adjacent GAA grounds. This will be a dual sided wall, and will also be available for use by patrons of the GAA grounds. In assessing the application, planners with Clare County Council found there would be no adverse impacts on traffic safety and / or free flow of vehicles and pedestrians within the site.
