Ennis anti water charge rally

People from towns and villages all over Clare converged on O’Connell Square in Ennis this afternoon (Saturday)  for the latest in a series of public protests against the imposition of domestic water charges. Protesters from other counties also attended in a show of solidarity with Clare Says No To Water Charges and other like-minded groups and  individuals, who are standing resolute on the issue. The message, which was impressed upon Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, when he witnessed anti-charges protesters on his visit to Ennis and Shannon earlier this week, was reaffirmed by a number of speakers this afternoon. This is the third major anti water charge rallies in Ennis and comes at the end of a week, where there were stand-offs in housing estates and individual homes around the county between householders and personnel attempting to install meters, on behalf of Irish Water. Water meter protesters to flood Ennis

Residents’ associations in south-east of the county are leading a new wave of protests against the installation of water meters, ahead of plans for a major demonstration in Ennis this Saturday. The public protest, organised by  Clare Says No to Water Charges, will begin at O’Connell Square at 1pm. This week, sub contractors acting on behalf of Irish Water have been prevented or delayed from installing water meters in Killaloe, Parteen, Meelick and a number of housing estates in the sprawling Westbury Housing development. Maurice Walsh, who lives in Clarisford, Killaloe, confirmed that contractors were prevented from installing water meters in their estate on Tuesday at 11am, after residents requested contracts and consent forms. Residents have mounted daily peaceful protests at the entrance to the estate in recent weeks during working hours, to ensure contractors don’t get a free passage for the installation of meters.
