Crunch time in race for Clare football crowns

Eoin Brennan previews this weekend’s action in the senior, intermediate and junior football championships Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final Play-Off Clondegad v St Joseph’s D/B at Cusack Park Ennis, Sunday 3pm Much has changed since these sides last met in the senior championship four years ago. That 1-18 to 0-4 opening round pummelling at the hands of Clondegad was the beginning of the end for that Parish side as they subsequently fell to intermediate level. Backed by a fresh crop of young guns, Doora/Barefield soared back to senior level for the 2021 campaign and excelled by reaching the last eight at the first attempt. With any hint of relegation now extinguished, it is hoped that the kamikaze rushes of blood to the head that coughed up two goals in all three group matches can be replaced by a more composed collective unit as the Parish have simply nothing to lose. Clondegad’s development curve hasn’t exactly remained on the up either since …

Seven-Up in prospect for Éire Óg as SFC reaches round 3

Senior Football Championship Round 3 Group 1 Éire Óg v Corofin at Cusack Park Ennis, Saturday 6.30pm With three quarter-final places on offer from Group 1, most eyes will be fixated on the other group tie in Ennistymon as a St Breckan’s victory would automatically see Corofin join Éire Óg in the quarter-finals regardless of the result between these neighbours. The thing is that the defending champions still require something out of this game in order to confirm top spot and fundamentally will be determined to maintain their perfect title defence thus far. Corofin arguably require a result more though as first and foremost, they can’t simply depend on their North Clare brethren to do them a favour and essentially require a positive result following contrasting performances so far. Off the back of a lacklustre display against St Breckan’s, expect Corofin to throw everything at the Ennis side on the welcome return to Cusack Park. However, with Éire Óg seeking …

Make or break for some in penultimate round of Clare IFC

Eoin Brennan looks ahead to this weekend’s Intermediate Football Championship Round 2 games  Group 1 Kildysart v Naomh Eoin at Shanahan McNamara Park Doonbeg, Sunday 12.30pm Fresh from their 13 point victory over underage amalgamation partners Coolmeen, there seems to be a more ruthless streak surrounding Kildysart this year, perhaps following the major confidence boost of reaching a first Cusack Cup decider. Naomh Eoin matched Kilrush in their derby opener but Kildysart are a step up again. Verdict: Kildysart Kilrush Shamrocks v Coolmeen at Labasheeda, Sunday 2pm With the Shams getting off the mark with a gritty local victory over Naomh Eoin, they will be determined to cement a quarter-final spot in their bid for immediate senior redemption by lowering a Coolmeen side still reeling from their sizeable reverse to Kildysart. Both sides have a refreshing youthful look but Kilrush’s added sprinkling of senior experience should be decisive. Verdict: Kilrush Shamrocks Group 2 Kilfenora v Banner at Páirc Finne Corofin, …

Local derbies aplenty as intermediate championship kicks off

The Clare Intermediate Football Championship begins this Saturday – Eoin Brennan previews the first round action Round 1 Group 1 Kildysart v Coolmeen at Lissycasey, Saturday 3pm A rare civil war between these underage amalgamation partners but while both will fancy their chances of emerging from the group, it’s Kildysart that possess the genuine title ambitions and should have too much firepower for their neighbours. Verdict: Kildysart Naomh Eoin v Kilrush Shamrocks at Shanahan McNamara Park Doonbeg, Saturday 6pm A rare coastal derby at intermediate level at least as it’s only three years since Kilrush edged out the first Naomh Eoin/O’Curry’s adult partnership at senior championship level. The Shams also have nine points to spare the previous season over Naomh Eoin on their way to the intermediate crown so while the margin should be tighter, the same result is anticipated. Verdict: Kilrush Shamrocks Group 2 Banner v Cooraclare at Lissycasey, Saturday 4.45pm Only five years ago three championship tiers separated …

One more step to Clare intermediate football final

Eoin Brennan casts his eye over the intermediate football championship semi-finals taking place on Saturday O’Curry’s v Corofin at Cusack Park, Saturday 1.30pm Amazingly it’s nine years since O’Curry’s and Corofin locked horns in a championship tie. Bbut while their paths haven’t directly crossed, their seesaw journeys have been eerily similar having both won intermediate titles in the past decade and thus only dropping from the top flight in recent seasons. Following their 2012 intermediate success, the hammer finally came down on O’Curry’s senior adventure with the five team culling of 2018, with Corofin amazingly avoiding that wide trapdoor, only to fall the following season. Favourites to bounce straight back up, Corofin failed to take their chances in last year’s decider against St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield and consequently will be gunning to make amends this time around. This is also a golden opportunity for O’Curry’s to make a major breakthrough as with every passing season at intermediate level, their senior memories …

Clare intermediate championship previewed

Eoin Brennan previews the intermediate football championships TWELVE teams are divided into three groups, with the top two teams from each advancing to the quarter-finals along with the two best third placed teams based on points and then scoring difference if tied on points. Two teams will drop down to Junior A for 2022. The bottom team in each group will enter a three-way relegation play-off. The first team drawn will receive a bye. The other two teams will play off with the losing team relegated. The winning team will play the team which received the bye and the losing team from this tie will also be relegated. Group 1 – Kildysart, Liscannor, Michael Cusack’s, Kilfenora It’s not just a geographical divide as Kildysart will be favourites to top a group composed of a North Clare alliance that at underage level are partnered up as Clann Lir. Kildysart’s Cusack Cup experience should be beneficial in negating any pitfalls, especially a …
