€2.4m for Clare housing

Three approved housing bodies have been allocated funding totalling €2,416,000 for the delivery of 31 new housing units in the county, Clare County Council has confirmed. The funding has been jointly approved by Environment Minister Alan Kelly and Minister for State for Housing Paudie Coffey. Focus Ireland Housing Association is being allocated €550,000 for the delivery of 12 units, for young adults (18+ years) at risk of homelessness. €966,000 is being allocated to Clare Haven Services Ltd for the provision of seven units at Kildysart Road in Ennis, which are being allocated to women at risk of homelessness due to alleged domestic violence. Kilkee Housing Association has been allocated €900,000 for the delivery of 12 homes in Doonbeg, to cater for rural housing needs in the wider area. Clare County Council says it expects that newly acquired units will come on stream for people with housing need this year while the newly constructed units will be completed by 2017.

Law favours dogs over people

ANIMALS enjoy more protection under the law than adult victims of domestic violence in Ireland, a prominent Clare politician has claimed. Senator Tony Mulcahy, who previously revealed his own childhood had been destroyed by domestic violence, has called on Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald to introduce more stringent penalties against perpetrators of this crime. The Fine Gael Senator made the plea noting that someone who inflicts cruelty on a dog can be fined up to €250,000, or face up to five years imprisonment, while there is far less protection for someone over the age of 18, either male or female, who is a victim of domestic violence. A person convicted in the district court of causing harm can receive a maximum fine of €1,500 or up to 12 months in prison. “If we can introduce law to protect animals, we should be able to protect a man or woman that is being brutalised in their own home,” he said. “Friends of …

Housing shortage affects Clare Haven

THE lack of affordable private rental housing and the absence of sufficient social housing have been cited as key reasons behind the fact that Clare Haven were unable to accommodate 148 women and 272 children in 2013. Denise Dunne, services manager with Clare Haven, highlighted this in a week when an international effort to raise awareness of and curtail violence against women was launched locally in Kilkee and Ennis. Tuesday marked the start of the 16 Days of Action and Awareness of Violence against Women. This is a global campaign that runs until December 10, International Human Rights Day. As part of this campaign, the Clare Local Area Network on Violence against Women launched Safe Ireland’s Man Up campaign in the de Valera Library in Ennis on Tuesday. Meanwhile, at an event in Kilkee, co-ordinated by the West Clare Family Resource Centre, balloons were released and a group of women met with Rachel Doyle from the National Women’s Council. “One …

Fr Ger bids to row into the record books

ENNIS-based priest Fr Ger Fitzgerald is attempting to break the world record for the longest journey on a land rowing machine, in aid of Clare Haven and Bushy Park Ennis. In order to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, the cleric must complete at least 5,280km on the rowing machine. The current record holder is Rob Bryant, an American man who covered a distance measuring 5,278.5km on a land rowing machine. “Last year, I attempted to cycle 30 miles every day for 30 days in aid of Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. With much support from my friends in Ennis, I was able to succeed and raised over €6,000 for the charity. This year, I wanted to do something different for a local charity and the idea I got was to attempt to break a world record. Given that I wouldn’t be very fit at the best of times and also given the fact that I have no patience for …
