First silverware of Clare soccer season up for grabs

The Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) will hold its first domestic finals this coming weekend with the Liam Cleary sponsored league cup finals. First up on Friday evening, Ennis Dons will take on Hermitage in the Second Division Cup final at Frank Healy Park (kick off 7.30pm). Ennis Dons have started the season in impressive fashion, reaching the final of this competition while also currently sitting on top of the Brian Pyne Tiles Second Division. They have played more games than anybody else in their league but they did record an impressive 4-0 win over Shannon Hibs B in their last league outing. Meanwhile, Hermitage FC racked up nine goals in their three group games in this competition, gaining two wins and a draw from their three encounters. GALLERY: Celtic lead, but it’s tight at top of Clare league

Newmarket Celtic and Avenue United continued their winning ways as the pair picked up 5-1 wins over Tulla United and Kilrush Rangers respectively. Meanwhile, Bridge United were held to a draw against a resurgent Shannon Town as Mark Colbert’s side saw their winning start to the league come to an end. Coole FC moved up to fifth place after their second league win on the bounce as they defeated a Mountshannon Celtic side who are still searching for their first points of the campaign. Newmarket Celtic moved two points clear at the top of the Maloney Hardware Premier Division with a big win over Tulla United. The league leaders struck twice in three minutes during the opening half with Eoin Hayes and Darragh Leahy finding the target. Tulla shock Lifford as Bridge edge through in Munster Junior Cup

Ivan Smyth rounds up the Clare soccer action across league and cup competitions BRIDGE United progressed to Round Two of the Munster Junior Cup as they saw off Newmarket Celtic B 4-3 after extra time. Paul Corry scored the decisive goal as Newmarket’s B side provided a stern test. Brendan Harkin, Damien Halpin and Conor McCarthy all found the net for Newmarket but it wasn’t enough for them to cause a major upset. Leon Daly grabbed his side’s first goal but after Bridge fell behind, substitute Ronan Tuohy put them back on level terms with U16 players Jack O’Halloran and Darragh Hayes playing pivotal roles for their third goal before Corry edged Bridge through. Tulla United produced an upset of sorts as they knocked out fellow Maloney Hardware Premier Division side Lifford AFC. Soccer wrap: Newmarket slip but Avenue don’t fully capitalise

Last weekend saw two shock results with Newmarket Celtic falling to a 3-2 defeat against third placed Shannon Town. Meanwhile, Avenue United managed to salvage a draw against Bridge United with a 94th minute equaliser. They may look back on not winning this game with regret as given the Newmarket result, they would have been crowned champions. On Tuesday evening an appeal by Sporting Ennistymon against an FAI ruling on the circumstances surrounding international clearance for one of their players was unsuccessful. As a result Avenue have now awarded two extra points, as their draw in recent weeks against Sporting has now been awarded as a victory. This means that Avenue only need a draw if they are to dethrone Newmarket as champions with the sides meeting in the league decider next Wednesday in Roslevan. Dates set for Clare soccer finals

THE dates for the four local soccer cup finals have been released with these eagerly awaited showdowns set to take place in two weeks time. Newmarket Celtic and Avenue United will do battle in the League Cup final on Friday October 22 with both sides in great form heading in to this encounter. The pair are both unbeaten after the opening rounds of the Clare District Soccer League (CDSL). These sides have dominated Clare soccer for the last decade with Newmarket Celtic eager to add further silverware to their collection. They will be made to work hard though as they face an Avenue United side who are eager to get one over their main rivals. Tulla United want help putting them in the picture

AS the local soccer season gets ready to kick off in the coming weeks, one long-standing member of the Clare District Soccer League has been very active over the past number months putting the finishing touches to a club history that tells the story of the game’s emergence in East Clare from the 1970s onwards. The Tulla United story will be launched in the coming months, but ahead of its publication date the East Clare club has put a call out to all present and past members, as well as supporters, in an effort to source additional photographs for inclusion in the finished product. “We have gathered a good deal of photographs so far,’ says Denis Corry of the Tulla United History Committee, “but are eager to see if there are any more photos of interest out there involving the club over the years. “We are particularly interested to see if any of the older club members or their families …

Orange alert until 6pm

WHILE the worst of the snow is now over, driving conditions around Clare are still very poor in many areas, while a Met Éireann status orange warning remains in place until 6pm. The warning, which was issued at 6am, states, “Some snow this morning, widespread treacherous surfaces due to ice and lying snow. Rain will begin to spread from the south today and this will start the melting process with potential flooding. Updates will follow.” Shortly after 10am this morning Clare County Council tweeted that its crews are currently clearing streets and footpaths in the county’s main towns, while its trucks are out gritting roads. It has also said that the Active Ennis Leisure Complex, Lees Road, Cloughleigh Astro Turf and Kilrush Sports Complex will be closed all day. There was disappointment for a number of families after it was announced that Ennis CBS confirmation had been postponed. All Clare District Soccer League games that were fixed for this weekend …
