A HOUSE which has been derelict for decades in Ennis has been described as a “blight”, while calls have been made for a return to two-way traffic at Upper Cusack Road. Councillor Mark Nestor, speaking at the monthly meeting of the Ennis Municipal District, branded the current road system as “dangerous” with traffic not stopping at the yield sign. “This is a very, very serious matter”. Responding to the motion, Ian Chaplin, acting senior executive engineer stated, “The installation of the one way system at this location was to facilitate safe passage of pedestrians and cyclists when the Greenway route was installed a number of years ago. The width available did not allow for a two way carriageway and path. To revert to a two way carriageway within the available space would require the removal of the cycle path which would leave an unsafe situation for pedestrians and cyclists. Clare’s double-winning All-Ireland hurling captain, Anthony Daly has been appointed Community Champion to the Clare Covid-19 Community Response Forum. The appointment follows the nomination of Anthony Daly by Irish Rural Link (IRL) and The Wheel, both organisations working with the Department of Rural and Community Development. Anthony expressed his “commitment to work with the Forum, its two sub-committees and the team supporting the Community Response”. He highlighted the importance of “working in partnership and co-operation with the various community and voluntary groups whose volunteers, at parish level, respond to those in need of shopping, prescriptions, meals and other assistance”. In welcoming the new Community Champion, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Clare Colleran Molloy, also praised the volunteers working locally and the collaborative approach of all organisations at county level seeking to serve the needs of vulnerable persons.    

A MEMBER of Clare County Council left her car, which is covered in her own election branding, parked in a one hour zone in the centre of Ennis from before 10am until after 6pm last Friday. Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy’s vehicle was parked in a prominent position, right in front of Ennis Cathedral, for the day. It is an area with heavy footfall and the vehicle would have been seen by many passing pedestrians and motorists on what was a fine and sunny day. However, the car was also seen by local business people, who rely on a turnover of vehicles, which the one hour turnaround time helps with, and there was some annoyance from them. One who contacted The Clare Champion said that it was very inappropriate for a member of the council, a body which is charged with implementing the parking regulations in Ennis, to flout those regulations. LEGALISING the prescription of medicinal cannabis is an idea whose time has come, according to Clare County Council. At Monday’s meeting, Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy put forward a motion that the council “ask the Minister for Health Simon Harris to prioritise legislation legalising the prescribing of medicinal cannabis in Ireland, where those suffering and in need, as highlighted by the recent walk of Vera Twomey across the country, will have their lives hugely improved.” Ms Twomey had walked from Cork to Dublin in an attempt to draw attention to the issue. Her motion was supported by Councillor Ann Norton. “For a lot of people, medication doesn’t take away the severity of the pain,” she noted. Regarding medicinal cannabis, she said it could be “legalised and monitored like other drugs”. She added that many patients already use the drug illegally and can be fined up to €2,500 for a first offence and imprisoned for subsequent transgressions. While she said she wouldn’t …

Fianna Fáil’s National Constituencies Committee has confirmed the addition of Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy to the ticket for the General Election, now earmarked for next year. She will join Deputy Timmy Dooley and Michael McDonagh as part of the Fianna Fáil team in Clare. Chairman of the National Constituencies Committee, Deputy Michael Moynihan commented, “Fianna Fáil is confident we have an extremely strong ticket in Clare as part of our election preparations. Our candidates will be working together in the weeks and months ahead to maximise the party’s vote with a view to winning two seats in this important constituency.”

Things went pretty much according to plan at Friday night’s Clare Fianna Fáil general election selection convention, with TD Timmy Dooley and GAA county board chairman, Michael McDonagh safely through. A lot of delegates were of the opinion that a third candidate would help them sweep up more votes and get two seats back for Fianna Fáil after the election. The fourth seat has been keenly contested over the past number of elections, with small margins deciding the outcome. With Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy the third placed convention candidate, ahead of Rita McInerney from Doonbeg, the likelihood is that she will be the one added to the ticket if party headquarters take on board the wishes of Clare Fianna Fáil. A crew of 20 rowers who have been circumnavigating the island of Ireland in a self-built 15ft skiff – a round trip of almost 1000 nautical miles – will arrive in Lahinch on Saturday, marking the half way point of their challenge. To celebrate this significant stage in their gruelling challenge in raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, the rowers will be greeted by a party atmosphere at the promenade from 2pm. Lyons tea, who are sponsors, will erect a large marquee and will serve refreshments including their renowned tea to guests while there will also be a large kids play area for children to enjoy. The Row-A-Round Ireland crew hope to raise some additional funds at the half way celebrations as they strive to meet their ambitious fundraising target. THE newly elected Mayor of the Ennis Municipal District, Councillor Pat Daly, has expressed his gratitude for the vote of confidence placed in him by the councillors of the district. The Ennis native said he was proud, grateful and humbled at his election, which was unanimously agreed by his colleagues at the annual general meeting of the district council. Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy nominated her Fianna Fáil colleague to be mayor, seconded by independent councillor Ann Norton and supported by councillors Mary Howard, James Breen, Paul Murphy and the outgoing mayor, Johnny Flynn. Councillor Tom McNamara sent his apologies for not being able to attend the AGM, as he is recovering from an operation at present but he also supported his Fianna Fáil colleague.
