Ennis Track coach: European bronze ‘huge for Dean’

Ennis Track coach Pat Hogan has hailed the performance of Dean Casey after the Ennis youngster secured a bronze medal at the European Cross Country Championships last weekend. Hogan freely admits that even though the focus with Casey was on producing a strong performance, the result is a huge boost for the Ennis man. “Ultimately sport is about results. It’s a results based game. Someone picks up the paper and they look at the result first. Everything a coach does is grey but it’s black and white once you step foot on the line. On Sunday evening he was third and that’s all that matters. “He worked his way through the race. Dean kept in the pack because it was a very challenging course before he managed to move clear on the last hill. It’s huge for him. Casey hails ‘unreal’ result as he claims European U20 bronze

Ennis Track athlete Dean Casey secured a bronze medal at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships on Sunday.  The Ennis man produced a lung bursting run to secure third place as the Irish U20 team scooped a silver medal. In his post race interview over in Italy, Casey stated: “For me it’s just unreal. I came thirteenth last year when I know I wasn’t the best so to come third this year shows how much training I’ve done.” Fellow Irish athlete Nick Griggs finished second as he was pipped on the line. Casey ran the 6km race in 17 minutes and 46 seconds. He finished six seconds behind the winner from Great Britain Will Barnicoat and five behind Griggs. He was eight seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Sam Mills in fourth. Ennis athlete to compete at World U20 Championships

Ennis Track athlete Dean Casey has been selected to represent Ireland at the World U20 Athletics Championships next month. Casey is one of eight athletes chosen to represent his country with the prodigious talent set to compete in the 5,000m event in Colombia. The selection is a huge fillip for Ennis Track and his coach Pat Hogan. Dean’s father Ger is also involved in coaching within the club while his mother Maureen is PRO of Ennis Track. Dean has enjoyed a stellar year so far as he helped his club become Junior men’s champions at the ECCC Cross Country Championships in February. He finished first in this race with his brother Dylan securing second spot as Ennis Track shocked Europe with a brilliant team display. Although he is more comfortable running the 5,000m, Dean obliterated the Irish 10,000m record in May. The talented athlete ran a time of 28.57.34 at the Highgate Harriers Night of 10,000m PBs Meet. Clare athletes running away with it again

THERE was more success for Clare athletics after  superb displays by St Flannan’s and Colaiste Muire runners at the Munster Schools Cross Country Championship in Cork Athletics Grounds last week. The St Flannan’s team of Dylan Casey, Dean Casey, Niall Murphy and Barry Conway, Thomas McGuire and Cian O’Boyle effortlessly took team gold in the Senior Boys 6,000m with the first four finishing in the top five spots. Dylan, Niall and Dean practically stepped over the line together in a one, two, three, with Barry only seconds behind them. St Flannan’s won the gold team with an astonishing six points. In the Minor Girls 2,000m, Coláiste Muire team secured gold with 22 points with Emily Singleton just missing out on first place. Her team mate Aoife Keane finished fifth with  Sarah Crowe 15th. In the Junior Boys 3,500m St Flannan’s won gold with 34 points with Flannan’s boys Finn Duignan and Simon Farrell doing a second and third. Patrick Thynne …

Clare athletes get back on track at County Championships

CLARE athletes got back running last weekend at Lees Road for the County Track and Field championships. This event over two days was very well supported by all clubs in the county. Although modified to comply with current guidelines, there was a great atmosphere and some fantastic running and excellent performances in the field events. All athletes can now prepare for Munster Championships which are scheduled for each weekend in July.
