A 41-year-old Clare man has been returned for trial, concerning the alleged illegal possession of 7,606 images and 139 video files of child pornography. At Ennis District Court on Wednesday, Judge Patrick Durcan made the order for the return for trial of the Clare man to the next sittings of Ennis Circuit Court. In the case, the man is charged with, on September 4, 2013, knowingly distributing child pornography for the purpose of distribution, publication and exportation, contrary to Section 5 (1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998. The man is also accused of knowingly having in his possession the 7,606 child porn images and 139 video files at a Clare address on the same date, contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998. In the circuit court, the accused, if convicted, faces a prison term up to five years on the possession charge and up to 14 years on the distribution charge. …

GARDAÍ have carried out a major swoop on people suspected of being involved in many aspects of child pornography. Operation Ketch is an operation targeting those in possession and involved in the distribution of child pornography either through social network sites or via file sharing networks. The operation took place from February 2 to 52018 and was led by the Online Child Exploitation Unit (ONCE) at the Garda National Protection Services Bureau. During this phase of the investigation, searches were carried out under warrant pursuant to the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998 across a number of Garda divisions. The searches were carried out by newly established Divisional Protection Service Units and local detective Units. A total of 31 locations were searched and digital material which included thousands of images were seized for forensic examination. A 78-YEAR-old East Clare man has appeared before a sitting of Killaloe District Court, charged with possession of child pornography. The accused man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with knowingly having in his possession child pornography on April 30, 2009, at an East Clare address. Garda Aidan Sweeney outlined at this week’s sitting of Killaloe District Court that, of the images that are the subject of these charges, 81 fall under category 1, which is the most serious and relates to images depicting children engaging in explicit sexual activity or witnessing explicit sexual activity. A further 116 images, which are also subject to the charge before the court, relate to category 2. Judge Patrick Durcan was asked to determine whether the case would be dealt with in the district court or the circuit court, and he refused jurisdiction. A MAN who used  Facebook to make contact with a young boy, who he admitted planning to commit a sex act with, has been sentenced at Ennis Circuit Court for the possession and distribution of child pornography. The 33-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested by gardaí on August 28 of last year. Detective Garda TJ Molloy told the court that the accused had planned to travel to Cork to meet the boy, who he believed to be about 10 years of age, the following day. The man appeared before Judge Carroll Moran at Ennis Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty to knowingly distributing child pornography for the purpose of sale, distribution, exportation or show on dates between August 7 and August 28, 2013, at a Clare address.
