Killaloe nurse off to top American cancer centre

Killaloe nurse Charlotte Gleeson will travel to New York later this year to observe practice at one of the world’s top cancer centres. Charlotte, (33), who works at University Hospital Limerick, is off to the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan for a week’s clinical observation in October after winning the inaugural Sheila Clarke Travel Bursary at the annual conference of the Irish Association for Nurses in Oncology (IANO). The award is worth €2,000 and is named in honour of the late Sheila Clarke, a pioneer in the development of cancer nursing as a specialty in Ireland and a former president of the IANO. Charlotte was nominated for the Innovation in Clinical Practice Award by her clinical nurse manager Cathleen Osborne and by Catherine Hand, nurse services manager, cancer services, University Hospital Limerick. Corofin man pedals forward Shaun’s cancer-care cause

A Corofin native is among 30 friends and work colleagues of a County Donegal man, who is currently battling cancer, who will this week embark on a 350km charity cycle along Ireland’s western seaboard. They are on a mission to raise funds for Friend’s of St Luke’s and Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. Tour for Shaun 2014 is inspired by 26-year-old Shaun Doherty, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2011. The charity cycle will see the group, which includes Declan Keane from Corofin, travel through counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, during the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Many of the cyclists participating in the fundraiser are based in London, where civil engineer, Shaun relocated to from his home village of Clonmany five years ago, having graduated with a BSc Hons in Construction Management from Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.
