Shannon sees 26% growth in November

SHANNON has recorded another month of growth after terminal passenger results for November showed a 26% increase on November 2013, up from 77,002 to 97,292. In keeping with trends from the summer season onwards, the biggest increase was in European traffic, with November passenger numbers growing from 7,121 last year to 20,883 this year, up by almost 200%. A range of new services secured for the winter schedule, including Berlin, Fuerteventura, Krakow, Paris and Warsaw, were responsible for much of this growth. Transatlantic passenger figures also reflected the strenghened services, with a daily Boston and six times weekly JFK New York service. Transatlantic passenger numbers showed a 15% increase on November 2013 with 2,583 additional passengers. Britain is the airport’s biggest market, and there was a 7% increase there, resulting in 3,460 more passengers. Welcoming another month of growth, Shannon CEO Neil Pakey said, “The addition of the new services on our winter schedule is reaping a strong return. We …

Element Six adding 40 jobs and more may follow

ELEMENT Six are taking on another 40 staff in Shannon and say that there is likely to be scope for further growth due to a €25 million capital investment and the relocation of €20 million of assets to the Shannon plant. Five years ago the company announced redundancies and the overall number of Shannon employees dropped to 250. However it has since rebounded to around 360 and is now set to hit 400. Walter Huhn, Chief Executive of Element Six, was in Shannon on Wednesday and he said that the painful cost cutting measures introduced in Shannon have secured the future of the plant, and led to a situation where it is now expanding again. “We started the restructuring in Shannon five years ago with a very clear focus on what we wanted to achieve, what we had to achieve because the global market was changing and the competitive environment was changing. We had to be even more of a …

Stobart Air confirms withdrawal of all Shannon services

STOBART Air has announced that it will end its Shannon based services from January 5. The airline currently operates routes to Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh. While it had been known that Stobart was closing its Shannon base there had been hopes that it would continue operating services to the Clare airport, even though aircraft or staff wouldn’t be based there. Some weeks ago the Shannon staff had been offered the option of a transfer or redundancy. Stobart Air has said that passengers with bookings for flights post January 5 will be contacted by the airline in the coming days and will be rebooked on Aer Lingus flights from other airports or given a full refund. A spokesperson for Stobart Air said, “This is a regrettable decision and not one taken lightly. Shannon does not fit with our current strategic plan, and we have to make the right long term choices for the airline. “We regret any adverse impact this may …

Cree company cleans up

Clean Ireland Recycling, a family-run waste management business based in Cree, has cleaned up on the awards front, winning the Kerbside Collection Service of the Year Award at the 2014 Repak Recycling Awards. Run by brothers, John and Michael O’Donoghue, Clean Ireland has a large kerbside customer base of 30,000 households and their waste management service covers Clare, Limerick, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. They have a six-bin collection system, which consists of residual bins, mixed dry recyclables, food waste, glass, grass and clothes. They accept an extended range of materials in the mixed dry recyclables bin, once they are clean and dry. The introduction of the multiple-compartment collection vehicles, which are the first of their kind in Europe, has meant that Clean Ireland only has to do fortnightly collections. This, in turn, minimises disruption to customers and lowers the carbon footprint, as well as collection costs. Their pay-per-weight charging method, which applies the Polluter Pays principle, has proved successful, as …

Shannon sees big lift in August and September

SHANNON Airport’s recovery continued throughout August and September, with passenger numbers showing a 22% and 17% increase respectively on the same months in 2013. The biggest percentage growth on August and September of last year was on Shannon’s European network, which had a 73% rise in August and one of 51% in September. This was largely due to eight new European services being introduced. Transatlantic numbers were up 9% in August and 11% in September, while numbers travelling between Shannon and the UK increased by 5% in August and 3% in September, year on year. Welcoming the figures, airport Chief Executive Neil Pakey said, “What is most pleasing is we are achieving growth across all our markets. Last year we saw the biggest gains on transatlantic but this year the biggest increase has been in European services, with growth also on our UK network. All of this is particularly important this year with the launch of the Wild Atlantic Way. …

Shannon representatives grilled by Public Accounts Committee

Shannon representatives were before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee this afternoon where they were quizzed about the Shannon Development Accounts for 2013. Much of the session centred on a property transaction in Co Limerick as Deputy Joe Costello and Committee Chairman Deputy John McGuinness grilled them about Shannon Development’s sale of two units to Munster Packaging Ltd. Deputy Costello claimed that one of the conditions of sale was that the units be solely used for the purchaser’s business and not utilised for speculation. However he said that he understood that since the sale an individual had offered original tenants HL Commodity Foods a 13 year lease. He claimed that on the face of it, there seemed to have been “flagrant abuse” of the condition that the premises only be for Munster Packaging use. Ray O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Shannon Commercial Properties said that HL Commodity Foods had made enquiries about acquiring the premises in 2006 and 2008 but had opted …

DONALD Trump was back in Doonbeg at the weekend, inspecting Trump International Golf Links & Hotel. While an earlier visit saw Trump welcomed to Ireland by musicians on the runway at Shannon and the Minister for Finance, last weekend seems to have been more low key. On Monday Managing Director Joe Russell said; “He (Trump) arrived on Saturday evening, he was here on Saturday and Sunday night and left on Monday morning and went on to Scotland. As you know he has acquired Turnberry and he’s there now and going on to Aberdeen for the rest of the week.” Regarding the time spent by Trump at Doonbeg, Mr Russell said; “On Saturday evening we did a tour of the golf course for a couple of hours. We had Martin Hawtree who’s working on our golf course design, he has done a lot of work on Lahinch over the last number of years. Martin was with us, head pro Brian Shaw, …
