THE Miles of Memories charity walk, which will take place in the Burren next month, was officially launched by musician Chris Droney this week. The walk will take place on the Caher Way on Sunday, October 12 at 1pm and is an important fundraiser for Cuimhneamh an Chláir, the Clare oral history and folklore group. The organisation has amassed a significant archive since it was established in 2009, with over 540 of Clare’s most elderly citizens recorded. The walk will include talks on the heritage of the Burren, using interviews from the archive, as well as speakers on the day, covering topics like botany, geology, local history and archaeology. Walk co-ordinator Linda Quinn explained, “The walk will take place on Sunday, October 12 with registration from 12pm at the Fanore Beach car park. A North Clare business is the only one in the county to be shortlisted for the Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland competition. The Burren Perfumery has made it to the final of the awards, which attracted 28,000 nominations nationwide. Orna Mulcahy Editor of The Irish Times Saturday Magazine commented about the competition “Over the summer we put the question to our readers – Tell us about your favourite shops. We were overwhelmed by the response from readers who nominated shops they love across 10 different categories including boutiques and salons, artisan food shops and cafes, bookstores and specialist shops. The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark has been named in the longlist for the 2014 World Responsible Tourism Awards for the second year running. Over 200 tourism organisations, initiatives and businesses from throughout the world have been selected for the next stage of the Awards across 11 categories. The Geopark features in the ‘Best Destination’ category and is one of 20 destinations that were chosen from hundreds of entries. Other named destinations in the same category include The Lake District in Cumbria (UK), Arizona (USA), Reykjavik, Cyprus, Guatemala, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town (South Africa), Aruba, Pahuatlan (Mexico) and Colorado (USA). PUPILS from St Tola’s Primary Schools in Shannon and Tubber National School in The Burren learned about Kenyan tribal life from a  Maasai warrior this wek. For four years school-to-school connections have been established through the Becomeafriend.net project between Irish schools and traditional Maasai schools in Kenya. The children and teachers have been sharing information about their lives, culture, wildlife, health, creativity and passtimes with primary schools and on Tuesday Timothy Ole Mosiany visited the  two Clare schools to give pupils a first hand account of life in his tribe. During the visit to Shannon and Tubber, he talked with pupils from junior and senior cycles, who found out more about life back in Kenya and how it compares with their own. Timothy said, “I’ve had a wonderful experiences in all the schools here, the children are so bright and so welcoming.” The children treated Timothy to wonderful singing and dancing and he taught them how to do the world …

By Seamus Hayes Burren United 3 Newmarket Celtic 1 Burren United were crowned Clare under-17 soccer cup champions when they defeated Newmarket Celtic at a wet and windy county grounds on Saturday afternoon. The bad weather conditions made it very difficult for the players who, in the circumstances, served up a good game with the North Clare side emerging as worthy winners. Having played a 2-2 draw in the final game in the league the previous week in Lisdoonvarna, another close contest was expected. Incidentally they have finished on level terms in the league and must now play off for the title, a game expected to take place in the coming week. They were dealt an early blow when they lost goalkeeper Cathal Guerin to injury and this resulted in the introduction of James Howard. INTEREST groups have gathered this weekend, to discuss how the Burren’s potential as a ‘learning landscape’ might be developed. A study exploring this potential, commissioned last year by Burrenbeo Trust,  was launched at the  Burren College of Art earlier in the week. “The Burren is Ireland’s greatest outdoor classroom. While all places have a potential for learning, the Burren has that potential in abundance, thanks to the wealth and accessibility of its geology, flora, fauna, archaeology, history and culture. For many years, the Burren has been the destination of choice for school tours and university outings but its potential as a learning destination of international renown remains largely untapped,” said Dr Brendan Dunford of Burrenbeo Trust. “The Burren’s pioneering initiatives in conservation farming, volunteering, place-based learning and ecotourism represent best-practice models of sustainable land use in our nation today and offer fascinating insights and experiences to other regions. TOURISM Ireland, together with various Irish tourism enterprises, including Clare Tourism Forum and Shannon Heritage, mounted a major presence at this year’s Philadelphia Flower Show, to target the increasing number of Americans interested in visiting gardens in Ireland. The Philadelphia Flower Show is the world’s largest indoor flower and horticultural exhibition, attracting about 265,000 visitors each year; an ideal platform to showcase Ireland and the wonderful mix of unique gardens to be found here. This year, the centrepiece of the Tourism Ireland stand was a special garden exhibit called The Wild Atlantic Way. Modelled on Ireland’s newest visitor experience, the space featured a replica of the Poulnabrone dolmen and was designed to bring the wild landscape of our western seaboard to life for the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the show.    

MINISTER of State for Touirsm Michael Ring is in County Clare this Tuesday for a number of engagements. At noon he will perform the official opening of the new extension to the Burren Outdoor Centre, at Turlough, Bellharbour. Following this he will meeet the board of directors Lisdoonvarna Failte to dicusss tourism in the North Clare area. Finally, he will travel to West Clare to visit the rebranded Trump International Golf Links, Doonbeg to be briefed on development plans. Minister Ring will be accompanied by Clare Fine Gael Oireachtas members.
