THE owner of the Bunratty Castle Hotel in the Clare tourist village has received net insurance proceeds of €1.75m from a fire that damaged the hotel last year. That is according to new group accounts for the owners of the hotel, Blarney Woollen Mills Group which show that arising from the insurance claim from the June 2021 fire, the group received insurance proceeds of €1.98m that off-set associated costs of €230,581. The group also operates the Meadows and Byrne outlet in Bunratty. The insurance payout last year contributed to profits at the group increasing more than four fold to €8.38m. New accounts show that Blarney Woollen Mills Group Ltd and subsidiaries recorded the 447pc increase in pre-tax profits after revenues surged by 44pc or €11m from €24.75m to €35.75m in the 12 months to the end of January 31 this year. TWO planning applications have been lodged for developments at Bunratty Castle Hotel. One of the applications is for the retention of works to rationalise, upgrade and repair (principally required due to fire damage) part of the existing hotel. The works subject to retention permission include the removal of walls and external structures, as well as the construction of a single storey extension. It also seeks permission for the provision of a new frontage to the bar/bistro, and an increase in parking spaces. The second application seeks permission for a single storey extension to the front of an existing function room, to be used as a pre-function room, the provision of an external terrace to the south and east of the pre-function room and the provision of an extension to the raised terrace to the front of the bar/bistro. PLANS have been lodged with Clare County Council for improvements to a prominent hotel, which could see the creation of 30 jobs, writes Owen Ryan. According to the planning application made by Bunratty Castle Hotel, the development would see the “rationalisation, upgrade and repair (principally required as a result of fire damage) of part of the existing hotel resulting in an increase in gross floor area from 1,377 square metres to 1,559 square metres”. There would be removal of internal and external walls and external structures, the reconfiguration of certain internal spaces, the construction of a single storey extension to the rear of the hotel and the provision of a new extended frontage to the bar/bistro. Models from the Holman-Lee agency will showcase the latest fashions from more than 10 boutiques and shops in the Limerick, Shannon and Ennis areas at a fundraising fashion show in Bunratty next week.
