EIGHT hunting dogs were shot dead in Broadford on Wednesday, following attacks on sheep on two farms. Clare dog warden, Frankie Coote has told The Clare Champion that the beagles and cross bred dogs were hunting under supervision but broke away and attacked sheep, killing two and injuring several more. “More than likely a deer brought them through the land and once they came on the young lambs,  this is the height of lambing season. Even supervised if they come on a deer, it can bring them anywhere. That’s what we believe happened. There are a lot of deer in O’Callaghan’s Mills and Broadford. The owner was with them when they lost them. This is unusual for hunting dogs to do this but all dogs will do it,” Mr Coote explained. “There was two farms. A South-East Clare community is in mourning this week after a Broadford pensioner died suddenly at Lahinch beach on Sunday afternoon. He has been named locally as Patrick O’Connell, Doon Road, Broadford. The 72 year-old man was paddling in shallow water about six to eight inches deep when he collapsed suddenly and fell down with what is believed to a suspected heart attack shortly after 3 pm.The incident took place about 30 yards out from the shoreline at the north end of the Lahinch promenade. According to Lahinch Search and Rescue secretary, Tomsie O’Sullivan two women and a man pulled the man in from the water on the beach where one of them, who was a qualified nurse proceeded to give Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Mr O’Sullivan recalled he was contacted by the Valentia Coast Guard service to confirm that an incident had taken place that required assistance and he confirmed this with two lifeguards who were aware of what had …

GARDAI are urging people to minimise the degree of opportunity for criminals following a spate of break-ins around the county during the past week. Last Friday, between 10am and 2pm, two houses in Madden’s Terrace in Clarecastle were broken into. One house was ransacked in an effort to obtain property and some items of jewellery were stolen from the other house. Thieves made off with a Phillips flatscreen TV following a break-in to a house on Golf Links Road in Ennis while in Moveen Park, Kilkee a mobile home was broken into when the front door was forced open. A brown leather purse containing bank cards and a sum of money was stolen. Gardai are also investigating thefts in Broadford. Aluminium piping was stolen from a yards in Ballyquin while, on a different date, three car batteries were also stolen from a yard in Ballyquin. At the end of a poor first half played in front of a small attendance, Scariff held a four point advantage, 0-8 to 0-4. They increased the lead to five at the start of the second half but then, in the space of four minutes Broadford hit 1-3 without reply to take the lead. In the space of a minute at the mid point of the half, Scariff had goals from John Scanlan and Cian Foley to open a five point lead and they looked to be on the way to victory at this stage of the game.
