THE Press Ombudsman and the Press Council of Ireland have upheld a complaint made by Clare hurling manager Brian Lohan regarding an article in the Irish Independent, writes Owen Ryan. Mr Lohan was not given an opportunity to comment prior to the publication of the article, which made a number of critical references to him. It was subsequently found that Principle 1 of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland had been breached, which states that in reporting news and information, the press shall strive at all times for truth and accuracy. In a summary of the matter published on the Press Council website it stated, “On the 6 July 2021, the Press Ombudsman upheld a complaint that the Irish Independent breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland. “The Irish Independent published in its sports section an article about how, among other things, Covid-19 restrictions had led …

Clare GAA Chairman Jack Chaplin believes “the process was pretty fast” when discussing the County Board Officers’ agreement to reappoint Brian Lohan for a three year term. Although a full meeting of the Clare County Board is needed to confirm Lohan’s appointment, Chaplin is happy with how the situation has been handled. “The process was pretty fast. We spoke with Brian a week after the last match against Cork. He had to discuss with the people around him so we understand that. We simply asked Brian would he stay on. ON Monday evening, Clare GAA moved a step closer to end the fears of supporters when Clare County Board Officers agreed that Brian Lohan be offered a three-year term as senior hurling manager. The two-time All-Ireland SHC winner had the option of another season in his current agreement, however, the board officials have moved to retain his services for two more seasons into 2024. The recommendation must now be approved by a full meeting of Clare County Board, but Lohan is content with the decision made on Monday evening. “I’m happy to get the three years. I appreciate there is loads of hard work to do. I’m looking forward to get to work. Hopefully the clubs will allow me to continue working with the team. PLANS for a new Aldi store in Ennis are “good news” for the county capital insists hurling legend Brian Lohan. The Clare hurling manager alongside Inch businessman Martin O’Malley are behind plans to develop the Westpoint Retail Park on the Kilrush Road. If given the go-ahead, the discount store will be an anchor tenant in the second stage of Westpoint’s development, with a HSE Outpatients Department already on site. Mr Lohan has lodged a planning application to Clare County Council for a change of use from retail warehouse to a discount food store at Westpoint. According to Aldi this new store will create 30 new permanent jobs at the store, and up to 50 construction jobs, if given the green light. It aims to open the 1,000sqm store in late 2023. That’s the view of former Clare captain Frank Lohan, who after successfully soldiering together for Clare for over a decade (1995-2006) including two All-Ireland titles in 1995 and ’97, is back in the trenches alongside his older brother Brian as part of the Club Clare fundraising committee.
