Obama link to Ennis festival

TWO men who were involved in the media campaigns for US President Barack Obama, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton are coming to Ennis next month. The visit has nothing to do with elections but puppeteer Chris Green and director David Soll will be among the interesting figures in the line-up for Ennis Street Arts Festival, from July 3 to 9. The theme this year is Culture and Identity, once again creating a platform for artists and the community to embrace and celebrate our cultural and artistic diversity. “Chris Green brings us The Language of Things, an intensive master class for puppeteers, choreographers, actors, performance artists, animators and creative people of all experience levels who are interested in exploring the possibilities of material based story telling,” said Ana Bella Alvarez “The masterclass will be followed by an Ireland Premier, Puppet Film, a fascinating study of American puppetry’s history. No to Clarecastle motorway plaza

AN Bord Pleanála has rejected plans for a Barack Obama-style motorway plaza just outside Clarecastle. Earlier this year, Supermac’s Owner Pat McDonagh was granted planning permission by Clare County Council for a rest stop and drive thru on the Limerick – Gort motorway but the decision has been overturned on appeal.Supermac’s has a very successful plaza at Moneygall in County Offaly and another near the M6 at Loughrea. The planning permission in respect of the Clarecastle project was appealed by service stop rival, Applegreen, which has its own plans for a service area, 8km south of the Supermacs site. Later, however, Applegreen and Claureen Service Station withdrew their appeals and local man, Shane Brigdale was the only remaining opposition. The rejection of the plan represents a blow to the prospects of up to 100 jobs during the operation phase and up to 80 jobs during the construction phase. Shannon Group in US

A Shannon Group delegation is the United States this week attending a number of high-level political and business events to promote the wider region for inward investment and tourism. Representatives are attending events in Washington, Boston, New York and Philadelphia over the course of three days. The delegation is led by chairman Rose Hynes, who will head up the St Patrick’s Day promotion with Shannon Group chief commercial officer, Andrew Murphy and Shannon Group head of marketing, Marie Slattery. Among the high level events attended by Ms Hynes was the St Patrick’s Day Breakfast at Vice President Joe Biden’s residence, at which he singled out Shannon for special attention in his address.She also attended the New York Stock Exchange St Patrick’s Day bell ringing event with a host of Irish and US business leaders. Shannon Airport in photos

A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition capturing some of the golden moments and world famous faces that visited Shannon Airport has just opened. Closing the curtain on a year of celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the first commercial transatlantic flight into Shannon, or any land-based Irish airport, some 64 images, dating from the 1950s up to now, have been placed in a permanent exhibition on the walls of the airport’s transit lounge. The exhibition, which was officially launched by Shannon Group chairman Rose Hynes, reflects the international standing of Shannon as a global aviation crossroads as it includes some of the world’s best known personalities of politics, stage, screen and sport.
