  A Lough Derg community has been plunged into mourning following the death of a local teenager in a farming accident. Nenagh Gardaí are investigating a fatality involving a 15 year-old from Ballina on a farm in Carrigatoher, Nenagh on Sunday at about 3.30pm. According to the Garda Press Office, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene at the Health and Safety Authority has been notified. He has been named locally as Padraig McCormack, Ryninch, Ballina, Killaloe. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed it is carrying out a separate investigation into the accident, which occurred on the teenager’s uncle’s farm. Investigators from the HSA visited the scene of the accident on Monday and spoke to a number of people in relation to the incident. The HSA will be completing a report on this incident, which will not be published. This is the first farm fatality in 2018. Last year, 24 people lost their lives in farming accidents …

RESIDENTIAL property sales clinched almost €15 million for home owners in South-East Clare last year, official figures have revealed. Some of the highest prices for homes were realised in Killaloe, Ogonnelloe and Broadford, where a stunning period house and lands netted almost €1 million, according to the Residential Property Price Register. “Killaloe is regarded as the Kinsale of the region. People aspire to come and live years over the years. Killaloe is a popular location for people who move into the area and can still travel a relatively short distance to work in Limerick, Shannon or Nenagh,” said John Phelan of Harry Brann Auctioneers. THE enterprise and vision that transformed unused farmland into a state-of-the-art €2 million recreational park in Killaloe has been officially recognised with a national award. Clarisford Limited scooped a runner-up award in the national Pride of Place Community Innovation category at a function in Treacy’s West County Hotel, Ennis on Saturday night. Members of the group from Killaloe and Ballina were presented with a statuette and a €500 cheque for displaying great community innovation. Spearheaded by former Lions and Irish rugby star, Keith Wood, Clarisford Park was set up to provide a home for Lough Derg FC, Killaloe Ballina RFC and the local scouts group. The dream of providing a new recreational area for the local community became a reality due to funding from the Keith Wood Foundation, Clare LEADER, sports capital grants and the three anchor tenants clubs, who contributed about 10% of the overall cost. BREAST cancer volunteers in Killaloe and Ballina were tickled pink this week, following confirmation that an annual, local, charity walk has raised an impressive €325,000 for Action Breast Cancer since 2010. Last June, almost 900 people descended on the Shannonside towns of Killaloe and Ballina to take part in the fifth Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk, to raise funds for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. It was the biggest event yet and was made all the more successful by the support received from the local community and businesses. Pink bra bunting hung from the historic bridge, sweets and drinks were handed out all along the route, and every house and shop had pink draped from their door or window. The local committee presented a cheque on Thursday evening to Joanne Murphy of the Irish Cancer Society for €52,098. A committee spokeswoman described the sum as “an astounding amount”, which was testament to the incredible fundraising efforts …

By Dan Danaher VOLUNTEERS  in the twin communities of Killaloe and Ballina will don suits of armour this weekend as they turn back time to stage battle re-enactments as part of the Brian Ború Millennium Commemoration. A weekend of family fun and entertainment has been organised for the main flagship event to commemorate 1,000 years since the death of Killaloe’s most famous son.  The Boru commemoration celebrations have the potential to generate an estimated €1.8 million in the region during 2014. A business plan, prepared by the Killaloe Ballina organising committee, also expects the year-long festival to generate an extra 5,800 extra bed nights in the area. Visitors to Killaloe and Ballina will step back in time and experience a glimpse of life in medieval Ireland during this weekend’s festivities. THE St Patrick’s Day parade in Killaloe was one of the biggest in the county, with enthusiastic crowd watching it cross from Ballina into Killaloe.   The was plenty of colour and atmosphere, with a diverse range of floats, as well as bands and community groups. The organisers were delighted that the parade, one of the key events in the Brian Boru millennium programme, was such an overwhelming success.

THE night skies over Lough Derg were illuminated with fireworks, as the new year dawned, marking the start of the Brian Boru Millennium Celebrations – Killaloe Ballina 2014. It’s a year-long festival, built around the famous High King of Ireland, who was killed after victory in the Battle of Clontarf  in 1014. The aim of the organising committee is to “reclaim” during 2014 Killaloe’s place as capital of Ireland, as it was during the Clare king’s reign. On New Year’s Eve, people from near and far descended on the twin towns to witness a ceremonial march from four locations to meet at Kincora, the spot where Brian’s palace once stood.
