“step into the shoes” of young people with Autism

A national and local Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) support group have united to help people “step into the shoes” of young people with this condition. AsIam and Ennis Voices for Autism (EVA) are delighted to invite people to AsIam’s new Youthhub – “The Autism Experience” exhibition in the Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis on Thursday, October 20 from up to to 8pm and Friday, October 21 from 10am to 3pm. This unique free pop up exhibition will help people to understand what it would be like if they could not read or see words clearly or could not understand what people are saying because they couldn’t comprehend their language. Supported by the Department of Justice, it will simulate an experience of what is like not being able to hear directions because a person can only hear all the surrounding noise and can’t communicate using their voice. It will show what is like to be hungry but not wanting to eat because …

Rocco a ‘godsend’ for Stephen

A North Clare special needs child is the first in the county to receive an assistance dog from a new national charity. Karen Murtagh, who lives in Ennistymon, has described the arrival of Rocco, a nine-month-old black Labradoodle as a “godsend” for her son, Stephen (10), who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Stephen is one of the lucky children who are benefiting from 48 service dogs provided by My Canine Companion, which trains dogs to assist children and young adults living with ASD. It is the only charity that will give an assistance dog to a child over 10 years of age, as other organisations like to pair an animal with a younger child. Each dog costs the charity over €10,000 to train and Karen will have to raise half of this figure over the coming years. Businesses in Lahinch, where she was born on Main Street, are already rallying around this worthy cause. The 19th Bar in Lahinch has …

Breaking ground on dyspraxia

SCARIFF doctoral student Lorraine Lynch is leading the way for a new study on Dyspraxia/Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD). Lorraine’s background is in psychology and while studying abroad, she began researching developmental psychology and came across dyspraxia. She noted that little research had been done on the condition and although statistics are not readily available, she noted it is quite common. Dyspraxia, is a condition that affects a child’s physical co-ordination and results in many difficulties with daily activities, as well as academic, social and sporting achievements. Although no consensus has been confirmed for the cause of dyspraxia, it is associated with a number of physical (obesity and hypertension) and psychological (depression and anxiety) problems that extend into adulthood. According to Lorraine, it manifests in children in different ways but one of the commonalities is that it can affect a child’s gross motor movement, such as poor posture and balance, which makes activities such like sports difficult for them. It can …
